I really like to have booth monitors, as it makes mixing more direct and hassle free.
I have a smaller PA active monitor that I can bring if the venue or PA rental company does not provide one (which most do).

I’ve never used a second set of speakers for monitoring. That’s what i thought headphones were for

If you like mixing in your headphones … many of us prefer the cue in our headphones and the live sound from a speaker. And as the OP says, delay and speakers not pointed at you (which by the way is really bad if you have the main PA speakers up close and facing you!) can make the room sound not very suitable for mixing.

I use a small Numark NPM-100 speaker on a microphone stand. 100Watt RMS and very compact. Only one on my left side (always cue listen on right) and I am all set.

Agreed I usually bring my own monitor unless I know the place has one. My father is a sound guy and just usually hooks me up.

Alright, thanks guys that helped a lot – it looks like I’ll have to invest in a compact monitor speaker then!
