All of this can help. I got my first gig in my main club where i was well known (already had some radioDJ expirience). And further gigs were in the same location, after this i asked for a gig in other clubs where i was once every month or 2. Connections = anything. Speak with other DJs – that can help too. I got like 5 or 6 gigs just because other DJs were sick or got a gig but they already had one somewhere else.

The best way is just to do social work and start uploading mixes and get the connection to the right people (other DJs, event manager) – you can ask them, write them online with a link to your soundclound etc. Ask for warm-up slot, like 2 hours. Stay till the end of the night, so you can meet all the people who work in the club after they had a good night – its usually a great time to ask them quick.

Its definetly helpful when you know the club, the gear and the crowd there (here in Germany its extreme – 100km and people run away from tracks that usually works great).

Keep it going and dont think about it too much – just try to get a gig. You will get a chance – and if you are good, it will be soon.

Sounds like you are in a good environment to get started. I like the attitude “got music & controller in the mail … just a little practice and I am ready to play in public!” .

Not saying you can pull it off that easily (keeping my fingers crossed for you anyway) but it sure beats sitting in your bedroom practicing for 10 years 😀 .

I can see your dillema’s. The thing is that you either opt for the steady income (bouncing) or the less steady one (dj-ing). Quite frankly, if you are just starting (assuming you can get the gigs to begin with), I am not sure you can beat what a bouncer makes in a month though.

Finally, yes – your network counts for a lot. This is especially true if you have been doing this stuff for a while. However it’s not realistic to think that DJ skills don’t matter. Let me phrase it as follows:

    • <span style=”line-height: 15.994318008422852px;”>Someone can be an excellent DJ, yet not get booked. Because of lack of social/marketing/sales skills for example.</span>
    • Someone can be a slightly lesser DJ who IS very good at networking/sales and marketing and has a big following he can bring to wherever he is playing. Which means (semi-)regular gigs.
    • Someone can be real good at networking/sales and marketing, but be miserable at DJ-ing. He/she will get booked at a place once and once only. After that it’s exit.

So you do need to bring some skills to the table in ADDITION to being good at getting yourself and your name out there.

Greetinx and good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I think you’re on the right path.  Maybe promoting would help.  Get involved with a crew and help out.  You’ll learn the industry and build your way into the booth.

Cheers for the great advice guys. I really appreciate it. I don’t think i’m going to go the bouncer route because although I would make some great contacts, it seems stupid trying to find a DJ gig for a time when i’d be bouncing at bars/clubs. I’m better off getting a day job at the weekends and hustling/chatting/networking/doing favours for promoters at the places i’d like to play in the night time.

How about you get a bouncer job only for either Friday or Saturday and look for DJ jobs the other day?

AH … fresh perspective on the case!

You sure you are not a Mensan, Stefan?

Lets not forget that you are in University a really great place to be a social butterfly, surely theres other DJ whos DJ ing at your university daily functions? Homecoming dance? Festivities and such ? Make a connection to them ( the DJ’s, Event organizer, etc).

Back in the day when I was attending the Universities, they had a DJ Competition, knowing I dont know where to start my DJ career, the competition its like a gold mine to me, I quickly signed up, and of course lo and behold I didnt win the competition, but i DID make connection to the other DJ’s, later on that DJ offering me a gig to DJ ing at the upcoming Spring Dance, and Jackpot!
