I have been using the Bose L1 system for well over 10 years as a DJ and have had many comments
on how great it sounds. In the beginning I used just one L1 unit with two base speakers for
groups of 200 or more, then I added another system for a stereo sound. I cant say enough about
this system. Its easy to hook up and small enough to put in the trunk of my car. I used the two units
along with a laptop and Newmark mixer KMX01 for Karaoke or if I needed to play discs.
I retired about five years ago at the age of 70. wish I was still doing it if only just to
    hear the great sound.
    I wish you well.

Hi Tony, I’use a pair of Bose L1 compact with a Denon MC 6000 controller since two years. In case of 50 up to 100 guests they are really loud, the sound is great (but I like Bose sound). If you need more bass punch, maybe one fine sub would be ok. Yes, Bose is not cheap, but you’ve already one, so you only need one more. And the L1 is really easy to handle and to carry. I think, up to 100 persons two Bose L1 compact are ok.

Apart from all the comments so far, Bose has always seemed to illicit love/hate relationships, as in you either love them or hate them.

Personally I have used Bose in adverse conditions (outdoors comes to mind) and situations where distributed sound and excellent speech intelligibility was necessary. I have worked in a few places with Bose setups in clubs and such and was usually less impressed with the sound.

The L1 I have heard once or twice and they seem like nice speakers. More and more systems are entering the market based on a sub/low end speaker with either a column array like the L1 or a more “satellite-like” top speaker based on an array system.

There is a definite advantage to using array-based systems. Better front/back sound dispersion to name one. Portability being another.

Again, it’s not “my” brand, but since you own 1 already, it makes sense not to disinvest by going another direction.

The only thing you might consider is image. Depending on your gigs, the crowd might have an expectation of what a PA should look like. And with all that it is, the L1s look more like hifi speakers than a full fledged PA.

Ah I have a friend who designs the electronics high end speaker systems and hi-fi gear who always drummed it in to me to avoid Bose … so apologies that I have contributed nothing with this post 🙂

Dear members, thank you all for your very valuable comments and advice. Much appreciated. Henry and Michael, do you think two L1 compacts would be sufficient for a crowd of up to 150, or would you say 100 is about the limit? Kind regards, Tony.

    Tony,
the L1 is a decent system and I have played with it a few times, 2 things I would consider however:
    – It is not a system that likes to be “driven” with a lot of beats etc. or it will get muddy
    – Although it has a good output in terms of loudness, it is low on the mid end

So I would say the max. is 50-60 people honestly.

Also when compared to the HK Lucas Nano Series, the HK will win any day of the week and for the price of the L1 you can get a Nano 600 which would be sufficient for 150-200 people indoors.
