There are a few MP3 TTs on the market (or TTs that have an option to record to MP3). The alternative would be to just record your records to PC as raw wave files and run them through some kind of clean up software. The most important bit would be to have very good (stable speed) TTs and good fresh stylii. And you want to make extra sure that you have the TT speed dialed in correctly (the strobe ring).

I would like to point out something Phil has been emphasizing on here for a long time. Be absolutely sure about the reason you want to transfer vinyl. In MANY cases, what you have on vinyl is already out there in wav, mp3 or other lossy/lossless formats. It’s a lot of work to do it right (not so much the recording, but getting it to sound right) and you should really ask yourself if it’s worth the trouble.

I have lots of vinyl and started converted at some point. In the end I did about 25 12″-remixes and have used a handful of them once or twice. With all the tracks that are around these days, I would have managed to survive without them just fine (some I actually forgot I had!).

    The best way:

Signup to a record pool with the best back catalogue. Get what you need, end subscription. Buy the rest on sales weeks on iTunes.

Saves you at least 5-6 weeks of work and a deep investment in a good USB turntable = well worth the money not converting it yourself…

    Hi James,

    I bought a Stanton T92 for this purpose – http://www.stantondj.com/stanton-turntables/t92usb.html

Mainly because it had a good spec, solid direct drive and a USB port. The results I got from it were great but after a few days of turning records over, editing and tagging audio files I lost the will to live and ended up digitising about 20 favourite records and ditching the rest.

A nice turntable though – I think I may have even preferred it over a 1210.

I’d recommend only ripping those tracks you cannot find in decent digital format anywhere else. For all the rest, you’d be better off buying digital.
