    Well honestly:
I use playlists and smart playlists in iTunes. They show up easily in VDJ or Serato.
For some samples etc. I use Serato “smart crates”.

If you spend the time to use itunes and get itunes to work for you…its amazingly easy to set up playlists and crates.

I have over 50 different smart playlists setup and finding any track is a breeze.

Thanx for your input guys. I did give itunes a go on a modern laptop and it seemed very slow with a large library and also very “limiting” in what it allows you /does not allow you to do hands on with the folder/file structure. I didn’t want to start an itunes / not to itunes debate. i did gave it a good try with the best intentions for two weeks but im sorry it’s not for me. probably works better on a mac but ill stick to a pc for now.

I dont think i need smart playlists at the moment. I do use playlists as a rough guide but build them manually. all i want is to tell the software where the mp3s are. then with a scan/without as scan to be able to find them based on filename and/or id3 tags doing a simple search. I think i explained it pretty well above:

“Was using virtual dj and where you search for songs it wouldnt provide the result unless you search for part of the title in the correct order. for example:
i had to put rolling stones satisfaction
    not rolling satisfaction
    or even roll satisfaction
If i put rolling stones, it would provide all the rolling stones songs”

Im not trying to diss dj software here but if winamp could do it all those years ago, then i dont see why such a feature has not been incorporated in modern expensive dj software…and if it does which one is it…i want it lol.
    Any more ideas?

Im really really really lost to what you are actually trying to do here.

First off using Itunes you need to properly ID3 tag your tracks…then there is a search on the top right where you can find any of the songs you are looking for.

Itunes is by no means “slow” on a decent computer PC or Mac…I myself use a PC and i have itunes on all 5 of my computers with no problems on any of them.

Try and use Traktor…there is a search function within Traktors library management and it will pick up any songs based on any words ever used. You can download a free 30 day trial of the Full Traktor Pro 2 software.
    IE:
Song is – Avicii – Levels – fat rat remix.

I can type in “rat” or “levels” or Avicii any of the words above and it will narrow my library to all the songs that have the word “rat” in it for example.

Is this what you are looking for?

If you use Traktor I have a better idea for you. Go and use Trainspotter (http://www.tspotter.net/)
Look away from the fact that it can help you organize your collection file for traktor with searching for your tracks in beatport (this is a lil buggy so for any means do not hit update tag without looking at what the program found for you!) but I recently looked into the Dynamic Playlist that you can make with Trainspotter and I have only 1 word: WOW!
You can make all kind of dynamic play lists that you can find in your collection when you start Traktor.
You can set up any kind of rules for a dynamic playlist like “show tracks that imported in the last x days” or “tracks that has x ammount of play count” or “tracks that missing anything in the tag” and the limit is your imagination. As the collection is handled as a database you can actually ass xquery command to the dynamic lists.
Imo this is a must for anyone that use Traktor and not using itunes (or even for those ppl, too).
So this can help you build a nice library.

INTERESTING! ok will try both solutions, i really dont like itunes but if software picks it up i have most things that matter tagged for artist – song title and how much i like them anyway. i don’t use traktor but vdj that came with the mixtrack pro. been organizing my playlists with winamp, sometimes with vdj. I refuse to use itunes for that matter. the fact that it will not allow me to play these five-ten songs in folder X and i have to add it all to the library just does not seem right.

what’s with pioneer recordbox? any good? what programs is it compatible with? was steering clear off traktor because of lack of video. need video for karaokes but if i like traktor better i could run karaokes off a separate laptop anyway.

As far as tspotter goes, does it work with other programs? or is it just for traktor? never heard of it to be honest but from what Erik is saying it sounds pretty good. will try. thanx for the info guys!
