Yea i definitely know what you are talking about. I used to LOVE having music on whenever i could during the day or while i was in the car but now that it has turned into my major hobby or “Job” i don’t enjoy it as much. Im ALWAYS trying to find new music so i never have time to really enjoy specific tracks. Also when i do fine one that i RLY like i wear out of it so quickly cause im constantly playing it all day. But i think it is all worth it. Heck its probably better for my ears to not listen to music as much anymore anyway!

I’ve found that it has killed certain tracks I used to love due to what the crowd wants to hear all night/ every week. I’ve also found that I grow impatient now with songs and after about 2-3 minutes (where I would normally mix my next song) I start getting restless! lol

On the flip side, I do listen to music all the time. My normal method is to find/ purchase a song and then I listen to it in the car and at work to get a good feel for that track. Sometimes I will even take the “long way” home from work or just drive around for no reason so I can get to know a song or album well. I find driving late at night helps me with this as there is just you, the road, and your music. No other distractions.

But has it killed music for me? I would have to say no, I still love it! 🙂

In my opinion i think it’s different for everyone. Some people say being a DJ eventually ruins their enjoyment of music and it might very well do so, on the other hand for people like me who even as kids spent their days digging through music and with headphones on almost constantly[unless i was playing tetris],it really doesn’t do much.Infact i’d say it’s improved my enjoyment of the music as i get much much more intimate with my music nowadays.

I guess I still like music, albeit it there is a distinct difference between what I consider “work” music and what I play at home and in the car.

What DJ-ing professionally HAS done for me is spoil the pleasure of going out to a discotheque. I’ll always be checking out the gear (sound & light), the way it is used. Watching the crowd react to what the DJ does and such.
Been a long time since I could just go in and be one of the crowd.

As much as I love music, now I tend to go out of my way when there is live music to stop and take it in. There was a time when I played music, and know both sides. The computer I’m typing this from is hooked up to 1100 Watt suround sound and playing from VDj an oldie or two.

When I’m casually listening to music, I stick to classical these days. I love most of the music I play, but it does wear on you fast (practicing and hearing the same track 10-15x, uggh).

I still enjoy music in different ways the whole day.
There is no silent moments in my live 😉
I think you have just gone a little overboard with the “how many new songs can I listen too” virus. Just let it happen.
I listen to spotify, mixes from our forum, internet radio (love Radio FG channels), iPod, iPhone music, beatport digs, my iTunes library streamed to my stereo, ….
Something is always playing a tune.

I love the music I play otherwise I wouldn’t play it. Maybe venture to a different genre if you’re getting bored or as Terry said maybe trying to keep up with all the new music has caused the problem.

I definitely agree, i used to just listen to music as enjoyment, but once i took the digital dj course, i’m always counting bars of music. =( but like phil said in the course its a great skill to have. When i feel bored of listening to the music i’m mixing i just go to soundcloud or mixcloud and pick out a podcast or set and just listen for new songs and new ways to mix.

After awhile you’ll quit consciously counting.

I understand where OP is coming from but for me I feel like I can spot a great track from a poor track more easily. Now a days there are only a few songs that I fall in love with but all of them are quality tracks.

He means eventually you’ll be doing it and not even notice you’ve been doing it the whole time.

Exactly. It’s all subconscious, you don’t even think about it, although if someone asked what bar the track was on you could probably tell them without even thinking about it. I’ve been djing more than 15 years, trust me you’ll quit consciously counting.

i kinda agree and disagree i can recall times that i was forced to do a certain type of mix(and didn’t enjoy it) also the top 40 mixing is boring as hell, however i remember times that i had the time of my life, djing is a job, a fun one but still a job it has its ups and downs but there is no other type of entertainer that gets more unseen respect than a dj.no one is going to remember your name at the end(expept you are going to make it in dj mags top 100) however they are going to remember the night and the fun they had.DJing is a job where you enjoy the fact that you made 50-1000 people happy for that one night and you believe that you will do that again and again.
