Sync is a tool, but it doesn’t make the DJ. That’s my take on it.

My Douglas, it’s good that you know how to mix without the sync button. I think a lot of beginners rely heavily on the sync button, and when they have to DJ on someone else’s equipment or setup, or without software, they no longer know what to do. It’s like the floor is pulled out from beneath them, and they don’t have anything to stand on. You gotta be able to make the magic happen without the auto sync, and without the assistance of the waveforms, because you might not always have them. Yessur

When I began, I forced myself to not use it at all costs, and it really helped. I can’t deny that there has been times when I’ve used it, like when I’m trying to get a mix nailed perfectly and I’m at my 4th/5th attempt. Like Phil said, it is a tool. If your DJ’ing a 3 hour house mix, use it, it makes your job easier.

The dreaded sync button. It can be a blessing or a curse, it can allow you to work harder or be lazy. For my type of mixing I don’t need the sync so I moved away from DVS. However, I now have a different type of sync; Quantization, my loops are matched providing I’ve analysed the tracks in RekordBox and my fx are quantized thanks to the RMX1000. I could turn them off but it’s my choice not too.I’ll beatmatch the tracks but really that all I do. The most important part of being a DJ is the music you play. Put two DJ’s of equal skill and the same selection, one could rock and one fail. DJing is about what you play, when you drop it and how you mix. Listen to some of the best DJ mixes and it’s like listening to a story or journey (can you listen to a journey???)
Like it or loathe it there’s no escaping it, you can be a better DJ,choose not to use, be a jukebox synced playlist with no thought for the crowd or go back to the good ol’ days of carry vinyl.

You should read D-Jam’s article, it really says anything about SYNC there is and his conclusions are spot on.
