    Slow down and focus…

Focus on your main objective which is ? the dentist i take it ? Focus on those as you main objective, DJ ing can be just a hobby or a side job, treated it just that, dont let it interfere with your main focus. Dont go all crazy and nutty, buyin all the DJ gears using you college tuition money either =P

    Stay focus !

The obvious answer would be to focus on your dentist career (long term security) and make DJ-ing your weekend job to keep you afloat financially.

A laptop (needed for college anyway) with a dual-boot option (so depending on the way you start it up you have either a college laptop or one set up for DJ-ing, all in the same hardware) and a decent controller (makes for a great xmas/graduation gift, hint, hint) will give you all you need to practice  with (and a monitor speaker, microphone and headphones, but since you’ve been DJ-ing already I am guessing some of it already exist for you). For playing out, just strike a deal with a local rental company (they’ll usually give you 15-25% margin) and just let the customer pay for equipment (if you are not playing in a venue that has gear) and take the margin. No need to go ape and buy that stuff.

IF (big IF) you are ment for music, you’ll figure that out as you get good and booked. If you happen to turn out a second tiesto, afrojack, armin or guetta, there is plenty of time to quit school and go music full time :-).

Indeed focus and go for it.

I know from personal experience that starting university at age 33 because you have been DJing and whatnot for the last 15 years… it is a hard hard hard hard hard hard hard thing to do and finish….

DJing now actually is more fun that I have a good education and a good job… I can DJ for fun for some added money and have a great time.

I say go with dentistry course. Just get yourself a laptop and start practicing from there. You can try to get some college gigs in the weekends and get paid for it.  Colleges and universities always have some party somewhere.  You just need to get yourself introduced and get some paid gigs.

Back in the day, on lean months, when school is out, our mobile DJ group gets about 2 or 3 gigs a month. On normal months, we’d get 8 to 10 gigs a month.  On peak months, usually on Decembers, we’d get 12 to 18 gigs a month.  I remember a certain week where we had six nights in a week.  I certainly had trouble waking up to attend classes and take exams.
