With two or more CDJs there’s a very tiny chance both will break down unless the mixer between dies and than any hooked-in iPod won’t help, either.

I have an iPod, my iPhone and a USB stick with me at all times.
Usually when the Club has CDJs I plug in my USB stick and load a track and then play via the controller.
In case my controller is it, then I connect the iPod to the mixer.

I’ve got an iphone, USB stick and a pocket with 15 CD’s. It fits easily in the bag, and you’re safe for the whole evening.

I use multi format CDJ’s so providing they don’t suddenly blow I’m good to use CD’s, USB drive or a LAN/ Midi connected Laptop

I have a spare set of cd decks/mixer plugged directly into my powered speakers, and an mp3 player plugged into my controller as well (Denon MC6000). If my laptop goes down, I can just quickly play an mp3 from the player. If my controller goes down, I can play a CD from the CD decks, as they are not running through the Controller.

If a speaker goes down, then I just hope to god that I can get through the rest of the night with just 1 speaker! thank god it’s never happened to me!

How about using a smaller CD/MP3 mixer? Did you go ahead and set it up on the table so you can easily switch to it?

I’m wondering because it appears that 99.9% of the gig logs I’ve viewed on Youtube (including videos uploaded by popular and professional DJs, etc.) do not have their back up gear on the table, turned on and ready to go. I thought maybe they were using an iPod/iPad for that particular gig.

I define back up gear as having a CD/MP3 player or mixer that can work on its own without a PC, OR using the inputs on a stand alone midi controller and running CDJ’s, an iPod etc.

What is your practice? I think we can agree that having a second mixer, pc, etc. turned on and ready to go is best way, but does everyone practice that or have you found more efficient ways of having your back up gear ready to go?

    Thanks.

I always carry a bag of 12″s, thankfully I’ve never known 1210’s/mixer go down.
