Hi, I actually used the MC6000 for years. If things went wrong at all they go wrong with the laptop/software, never with the controller. I had two backup media players hooked up to the outer channels for backup. Rebooting the laptop but leaving the controller on would always cure the problem (not that I had that many to begin with).

If you want total backup, a small PA mixer is the answer. Run your controller main out into it, as well as an iPad, iPod, iPhone, MP3 player, whatever, with a mix or couple of good tracks cued up. Now if something happens to your controller and it does need a reboot, you just hit play on your spare device, open the fader on the PA mixer and reboot what you need to reboot.

Thanks – think I’ll get shopping for a 1u mixer to rack up.

You could even try to get a second hand American DJ SDJ1 (shouldn’t cost more than 65-100 bucks) which is only 2u high I think. If you are used to working with an HC-4500 you’d have no problem using that as it pretty much does the same thing but with SD cards. Even in the event of an epic failure (hard disk crash, power supply gone, anything that prevents your laptop or controller from coming back to life) you could just keep on playing. With two SD slot both capable of having at least 32GB of music files for a total of 64GB, having enough music with you can’t be a problem.

I like that idea, as much as controllers in a bag would be easy to carry. I’m leaning towards racking up something like SDJ1 with a controller and a Formula Sound Shadow – had one of those years ago best back up mixer on the market.

I am a mobile DJ and carry all that I have in flight cases. Even if I have a controller only job, it’s my controller in flight case and a bag/case for laptop, headphone, mic and cables and such.
