If the table ois at the correct height and you are having fun jumping around then hopefully your back won’t get too sore. I find pain is much less if you keep moving as opposed to standing still. If you are thinking of sitting then best to stick to the “commercial” type of mixing ie wedding DJ. Sitting at a club will do nothing but kill your career.

Get an adjustable stool and bring it with you. One that you can get up high enough and comfy tug your feet in when you sit higher up.

How old are you? Have you got it checked out by specialized doctors? Trouble with the intervertrebrals isn’t to be taken lightly. Do you exercise (the back specifically)? No cure against back pains like strong back and core muscles.

It’s all about your positioning. If you arch your back and hunch over your gear your back will inevitably hurt no matter how fit you are. Watch some of the pro DJs, they bend at hips and stick their ass out rather than arch their back. Trust me, you’ll be able to have way more stamina this way. I’m 6’4” and even at home my back gets sore where everything is perfect to my level, now imagine low DJ booths.

Just be sure to keep good posture, shoulders back and bend at hips. Also invest in some good shoes with proper soles, anything to keep you going longer.

I try to surelevate my controller to the max. With the traktor s4 flying case I’m able to bring it to my level by superposing both parts. Move a lot, so that your back isn’t static, and indeed try to reinforce the muscles with appropriate exercices. You know, the exercices you can’t do when your back hurts and you don’t think about doing when it doesn’t hurt 🙂

I have Back Pain myself and i only can repeat what everyone else said. I do a few exercises everyday, it really helps, but you have to do them regularly.
But during a gig, most exercises will look rather silly 😉 I can only imagine that you could put on some work-out tune, bang out an roll mat, walk in front of the booth and invite everyone to do the exercises with you 😀 Doesn’t sound so bad 😉

Go to a doctor. Better figure out now what’s the problem before it gets far worse.

I am 16 and 6’6″ tall. I have been to the doctors, they told me to plank (not the joker kind of planking but actual plank like on a mat :)). I have been doing that and it helps but when this hurts it HURTS. Thanks everybody for the advice.

I get it too Chris,it’s a pain. I make sure to get my gear up as high as possible, and also do regular strengthening exercises. If you have pain at your age, now is the time to be doing exercise to help address it, as it will only get worse as each year goes by, sorry to say. And I would recommend a good Physical Therapist or Chiropractor instead of a doctor. A lot of GPs, if they can’t cut it or give drugs for it, don’t know what to do.

Planks + deadlifts = strong core + good dj posture = no sore back = win

The same happnens to me and it KILLS ME. Im 19 and 6′ 7′ feet tall (198cm) and even when Im able to find a place to place my stuff at a proper height (hard), the backpain kills me and Im forced to sit for 2/3 mins when its unbereable. I go to the gym, do taekwondo and run everyday but it just keeps happening, I just accepted it as a burden for life (lol) and I just sit every 20/30 tracks for 2 or 3 mins. Not that it is that much.

EDIT: It seems it is just something that happens to tall people 🙁 know your feeling bro

Yeah a lot of young folks who grow to be tall in short time are affected. You need a strong core/back. Not just for DJing, but for life and for your vertebrae to last. Nothing beats good old compound exercises like the deadlift or bent over rows. Do them properly though! If you can’t get proper instruction (trust me, 9 out of 10 gyms no one of the so called instructors can do a proper squat or deadlift) I recommend Mark Rippetoe: Starting Strength. Last book on lifting weights you’ll ever buy. I’d also recommend Yoga, teaches you a lot about posture, strengthens your core – plus it’s great for relaxing and re-energizing your self 🙂
