Well I think of myself as a DJ and I totally agree with you. The real magic happens in the production part. If you just take samples from another source and put them in, you are DJing with samples… sometimes to an extend where the samples take over and I do not actually like that.
I am however also producing, but mainly songs for artist friends of mine (and sadly none went to the charts yet hehe.) and I think if you are a good producer you can become a controllerist. Like moldover I also play guitar and sing, but I would not play my guitar on a controller…

You can check out this song I put together, it is 100% sample loops, some I took and some from Logic sample packs…

I am sure I could take all that samples I used, arrange them on a button box and improvise the song more, but I do not think it would sound as good…

Id day say I’m an aspiring dj using controllers, the stuff Moldover does isn’t like a normal dj to me. I switched to ableton from nuendo and reason after seeing his stuff as its just so cool but for me djing with ableton was a pain and too much work compared to turntables and I just ended up using ableton the way I used previous daws. Now I’m using Traktor and it’s what I wanted from dj software, though I’m no controllerist or tunrtablist for that matter. I think of a controllerist as the same as a turntablist someone who is a total expert and can create lots of new things with their tools, me I’m just a dj using controllers trying to mix 3 decks and the odd sample. You look at the patches Moldover made for reaktor, that guys just a total nerd, same with a lot of turntablists, wish I had the talent those guys had inspiring stuff though even if it does make you sick lol

im in the same boat as broomptish as an aspiring djay using controllers, i personally prefer ean goldens controllerism style to moldovers but both are amazingly talented djs and musicians and have contributed a lot to the art form as it is now

I play around with controllerism at home but it requires so much preparation that its not really too easy to pull off in the club without a tonne of time spent on it. A short routine that’s easy to throw in to or start off a set can be cool though.

Right now I just DJ, I spent a lot of time just focusing on trying to perfect mixing. When I’m playing live I just stick to DJing. On the weekend I purchased the NI F1, so I’m slowly moving towards controllerism, but it’s a long journey and I wont’ be bringing the F1 to do anything other than simple acapella samples any time soon. Listening to a djing doing “live remixes” and ruining everything is just awful.

I play/make music.. nice and simple… im a dj/turntablist that uses contollers to add even more to my sound. i think in a way ive moved past labeling myself… i play not just music, but my version of music, if im not playin remixes, im making em and im playing out tracks while cuttin n beat jugglin… so to say im a dj or a controllerist is a bit hard to define.. so for now ill call myself a musician.. or like my man rob swift said… im an abilist !
