I am lost. Clearly your definition of a sound system is different from mine. What exactly do you mean by sound system?

Best way to describe it is a mobile disco with speakers, amps and pre amp custom made for you. The sound system will be made up with anything from 3 to 15+ members all with a role. From box boy to the selector or DJ.

Today you have many different types playing anything from Reggea like Aba Shanti or DnB like Valve.

I am still lost, hahahaha. Must be getting old. So there is gear and people and you go to a public place to play? You are not talking about beat boxing or something right?

What you are describing does not sound like anything I have ever seen in my part of the world, but I may have been asleep at the wheel there (or busy with my own stuff 😀 ).

I doubt you’ll find many people who build their own sound systems anymore or even people who won’t just buy everything they need themselves, especially with active PA systems. You might find what you’re talking about in bands because most people will have their own hardware like instruments, pedals, amps, cabinets, etc.

Now on the other hand I do know a group who collaborates on their DJing, three DJs total and among them they contribute a van, a PA system, a lighting truss system, various disco lighting, and a hazer. Between them all they can put on a much bigger show than any one of them alone.

What Scotto has described is pretty much a Sound system but without going so deep as to invest in custom build PA systems. I found a youtube vid that gives you an idea of sound systems over here in the UK. If you got time and wanna learn more check it out.

I went to a warehouse party a few weeks ago in Brooklyn that had a sound system involved. They rent it out to other parties and have selectors who play Dub too. I think it was called Tsunami Bass

Wow, this looks interesting. I just started the documentary but my first thought is one would need to know the specific room/venue they’d be playing in order to know how to incorporate a customized sound system. And while it could sound great, practically speaking, you’re talking money (equipment rental, sound engineer ,people just move the stuff) and then to get the specific venue. So for most DJs, it doesn’t seem practical. Having played in a band for years, one of the biggest headaches was lugging all our shit around from club to club, and these are small amplifiers compared to these big sound systems.

Yeah as Mr. Simpson said, sound systems are trucks or vans loaded up with HUGE sound equipment. They’re known for being VERY loud and people generally followed them and had big parties outside

But aren’t sounds generally a Jamaican thing? I’ve never seen or heard of one in New York, but I may very well be wrong. I do know the glitch-hop artist Tipper drove a sound system though, the “Fuel Sound System” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Tipper#The_Fuel_years
