If you buy 320kbps mp3s there wont be any issues of previously been degraded to 128kbps ;). Mp3s found by “other means” though, yeah, you could be screwed.

I may need to challenge this assertion. I just bought a track off Beatport and the minute I played it in Traktor something seemed wrong. I just ran the track through Spek and unless I am reading it wrong (likely), the track cuts off at 15khz. Should I be complaining to Beatport?

Nope! You should be complaining to the producer of the track….There is no universal law where cut off frequencies should occur in a track. It is common sense that a producer will try to “take advantage” of the full spectrum (20hz – 20khz) but definitely not a law every producer is forced to follow. If my artistic choice (or lack there of) says so, I will deliver a track with 60hz bass cut off and 15khz treble cut off! 😉

Frustrating! I guess I can’t play this file. And I almost bought the vinyl copy too. Maybe I’ll go get the vinyl after all and rip the digital file myself…

Ummmm, hold on! What I implied earlier was the fact that what you are hearing (and seeing in Spek) is how the track was actually produced. If that’s not the case, in other words, if the track in any other form (vinyl in this case) sounds different, then you were right in your first message: something is obviously wrong and you should complain to Beatport – its either their mistake or the digital distributor-label mistake.

I always have the dilemma of whether to go for quality or hard drive space when I’m ripping my cds into itunes. I’ve landed up going for the 320kbps mp3 option as it seems to be the best compromise and in most cases apart from some very badly recorded rock stuff ( Husker Du – New Day Rising in particular ! ) it sounds fine – the tracks in my dj playlist all sound okay. Something I’m not sure about in itunes are the vbr settings and so on. I’ve got them set as on at the moment and like I say everything sounds okay. I love digital djing and having 2000 plus songs of all types on my laptop but there are some days when ripping a cd I own or backing up my music collection just seems like work whilst owning that rare bit of vinyl and taking it out etc just seemed like more fun…I haven’t got the space for vinyl now but I really miss it sometimes.
