ParticipantTraktor,
You can download a free 30 day demo off the native instruments website.

MemberDo I need to get a Traktor controller for that? Or will it work just as well with my DDJ-Ergo?

ParticipantTraktor will most likely work fine with your DDJ-Ergo
I’m wondering though, have you tried some different skins for VirtualDJ? The interface is very customisable and there are quite a lot of very different skins available (I dare say many more than Traktor or Serato).
As for library management, I’m not sure what you are looking for. The custom filter maps are very adjustable to your needs, but it needs a bit of work to configure them. The latest update (7.3) also introduced the ability to search in multiply fields simultaneously.
Still, you should try the traktor demo and see if it fits your style better.

ParticipantIf my understanding is correct, you want a better library? In that case, I wouldn’t really reccomend Traktor…It feels a bit underpowered in the library nav department…the only software I could say has a ‘better’ library section is Serato..but I’d make the case that VDJ really does have the most intuitive and user-friendly library. But then again, to each his own, and given enough time, any program could be crated to fit your needs.

MemberI maybe changing gears here very shortly. I may end up with a Traktor controller for Xmas, so likely I will be moving to the Traktor software regardless. The person buying the gift wanted to know what model so I will be putting up a new thread asking for suggestions.

ParticipantIMO you should start using Itunes a lot more for building sets and playlist etc. Then use your DJing software library to navigate the playlists you have already created.
Library should be almost the last thing that you should be worrying about when it comes to your choice of DJ software.

MemberI already own a over a TB of music, and not a fan of Apple. So iTunes is the bottom of my list of things I want to utilize, no offense to those who are fans. The point being I have the music, that which I don’t own already I have a lot of ways to get that don’t involve iTunes so I am reluctant to install it just for keeping my music straight.

ParticipantPersonally, I think VDJ is the best for the way it’s library works. I’ve used Mixx, VDJ, Serato, and Traktor, Honestly, Traktor is the biggest pain in the ass in this regard.

+1 about Traktor’s process of handling music libraries/folders.

ParticipantI’m just curious…what do you guys find is wrong with the Traktor library system?
Not that its a big deal cuz i do 95% of my work in itunes creating smart playlists and spend copious amounts of time making sure all my songs are properly tagged and have grouping/genre/feel/key all filled out properly…that finding tracks in Traktor is just super easy…espically with the search function. (Used to be a boy scout) lmao
What are your gripes, and complaints…as i dont really see the difference between serato and Traktor when it comes to library mangement…mind you like i said i just use my playlists i have created in Itunes.

With Itunes integrating with most of the DJ software its kind of a waste to not use it. I mean with Smart playlists, a plethora of fields to utilize it is really easy to find any track you are looking for.

Everything you mentioned is the problem. VDJ works the best in my opinion. I put all my music into file folders and then I play out of the file folders. With Traktor I have to do more work, i.e. using itunes. Plus, the tracklist is tiny on my laptop when running 4 decks, which is my biggest complaint. So my 2 options are use the search or switch to browser mode. Both options are annoying. With VDJ I just sort based on whatever I want and I can see 20 tracks in dialogue box without scrolling, and that’s with 4 decks running. Anyway, it’s usable but not near as good as VDJ. I’m also new to Traktor and I’ve used VDJ for awhile so I’m sure I’ll get used to it. I didn’t care for Serato or Mixx for a variety of reasons so I’ve barely used them.

KeymasterIt is somehow weird, but in Serato I find tunes a lot quicker than in Traktor and can navigate much more easy.
I have no idea maybe it is because the Traktor layout is a lot more cramped and Serato looks “cleaner” and it also may be that for some things you need a click or push of a button more to get there.
The only thing Traktor has that is nice are remix decks, but since I do not use those anyways Traktor layout still turns me off. But as I said 100 times, it is all about workflow, the same things might be totally vise versa for other guys.
What is funny that Maschine (same developer as Traktor) it is much more easy and I love Maschine…December 3, 2012 at 9:56 pm #33079Hee Won Jung
ParticipantOkay…at least this gives me some insight.
I do things totally differently, and i like being able to change my set on the fly if need be…and with my S4 i always use browser mode to load my tracks up…so im totally used to switching modes between tracks.
I always organize my folders of music by the dates i have downloaded the music so i have like a memory lane of folders all organized by month date and year…its nice when im not doing anything i can go look through my folders and see what i loved a year ago.
As i play a lot of different genres it is impossible for me to organize my folders by such and use Itunes for it.
But hey neither here nor there what ever works for you works for you…and thats the most important part.

MemberSomething I do is simply have all my music organized in folders in my PC by genre, artist and album (in that order) and when I got a gig coming, I just import the genre/artist/album i like to Traktor and thats it. Then i erase my whole traktor library to keep it clean and make track finding easier
just my 5 cent
