A lot of peopletake the DDJ-SB for their first controller, I think this is a very good choice, Pioneer quality even at that price.
You can check Hercules too that are making low budget controllers, they are really for begginners, in case you don’t like DJing after tried it you won’t regret to have spent a lot of money.

Out usual line-up for starter controllers is:

    Numark MixTrack Pro 2
    Pioneer DDJ-SB
    Denon MC-2000
    Reloop Beatmix 2

There are reviews on all of them over on the blog or in your 2014 DJ Controller Guide.

However, the NAMM show is on and the following is probably gonna be the new list:

    Numark MixTrack Pro 3
    Pioneer DDJ-SB
    Denon MC2000
    Reloop Beatmix 2
Denon MC4000 (this will be slightly more expensive, but already a little more advanced and definitely the best build quality)

Both new controllers are not out yet, so if you want them, you have to wait a while longer.

We present this list with the following advice: “Nobody can tell you what the best controller is”. The reason is that the choice for a controller is highly personal. It depends on what kind of DJ you are, what software you use (or plan on using) or what your worfklow is (if you have one already).

If there are very specific questions on part of a controller (like the jogwheels, buttons/pads), we may be able to offer some advice, again only when you tell us what you are trying to achieve and what your goal is.

From what I have seen at NAMM so far the Mixtrack Pro 3 and reloop Beatmix seem to have a slight edge over the competition, feature wise. After having played with it for some time last week, I honestly do not like the SB that much. I mean it is comparable feature wise, but some things just feel slightly off. The MC2000 of course is a workhorse and has great resale value.

buy used on eBay and get more controller than you can afford if you bought retail. Any of the Pioneer, Traktor or Denon brands are good. For instance, you can get a used Denon 6000 Mk 1 for Traktor or VDJ for $200 on eBay. They were $600 or so new. Same with other brands.. just get one 1-3 years old. Still work great. Get the job done and you’ll have a pro-level controller with pro options and outputs (booth and balanced out) for the price of those shitty introductory controllers.

I would not rule out Mixvibes Cross. It’s a good platform AND a steal at 49US/EU for the full version. It works like a charm with the MC6000mk1 (used that combination professionally til I sold my MC6000 – still hurting 🙂 ).

Any specific reason why the ddj-sb isn’t in your entry-level controller list? I’m just asking, haven’t triedi it.
