Hmm, you could go door to door selling Phil’s “How do Digital DJ Fast” course 😉

All kidding aside, +1! It’s not exactly DJ related, but how do you guys (students in particular) fuel your quest for new gear, software, and music?

Yeah coz initially I started out with zero gear and all. I started with a very old beat up laptop which died after 4 months of use. With no laptop and no gear, I had to save up and make sacrifices. But, then I wanted to ask other DJs here of how to get cash for gear and all, specially for students. Because, we all need to start somewhere. Most students depend on allowances and such. We all know DJ gear/software are heck expensive.

    Any tips and advise ?

Wait, do you have all the stuff in your signature? MBP and mixtrack, etc?

Yeah. My dad bought me the MBP. others I bought from saving for close to year. And for this reason I do not want to ask my dad for stuff. He has done a lot for me as is. He is actually paying for my education, food, gas money and inspite that bought a MBP. DJ gear/software/music is more of a hobby or in general terms a “Want” not a need. So, looking for ways on how to buy gear/software/music is out of my own ways.. But, sometimes people hit a brick wall, and go broke. So this is why I am asking.

Well, in my case (being a student) i try to do without, or use really cheap gear. So for software I use the freeware/opensource Mixxx (which unlike most free DJ software, isnt cheesy), and when i need hardware, i use a Korg nanokontrol (and if i can figure out OSC messages, an android app). I dont really have a soundcard, but i use ASIO4all to get low latency. I’m in the saving phase 🙂 This probably isnt the best way, so i’m interested in other peoples ideas.

A pretty good way to start is buying Algoriddim’s DJay 4.0 since you already own a Macbook pro. It’s a great application for the money and a pretty good way to start. I’ve been using it for over a year now going through Djay 3.0 and the recently introduced version 4.

Btw, Phil was kind enough to write up a full review on the app in the blog about a week ago. Look it up, as I’m sure you’ll like it

I am truly interested on how to get some extra bucks to help out people who want to DJ but can’t totally afford to buy gear.

Casual Job. Thats how I do it on top of my study.

It is hard to get a casual job while studying from where I am from though. Since most office hours are school hours.

You’re speaking to someone who has the same issues. I have 30 hours a week of University + related coursework and I tutor. I work for between 10-15 hours a week on top of that. It’s not a huge amount, but I can save $130+/week.

Practice on your mixing and try to get some gigs! In the beginning it will cost you a lot of time, but in the end it will pay out. If there are no good gigs around, start organizing them yourself!

Remember you can learn to DJ with just a laptop – controller is not strictly essential.

True, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to give some info for those people who wish to have controllers and use them to DJ as well?
