I’m currently using Serato with Mixtrack Pro, and i have speakers set up for at home but any mobile gigs I rely on provided speakers. So I am highly considering purchasing a decent set up that will increase my independence as a DJ. On the other hand, I wonder if just having a more advanced controller with more capabilities would be a wiser route of investment. My attention is on the Numark NS6. Which do you think would be a more wise investment, and if I chose speakers (any recommendations?)
I had this dilemma last year, and chose PA over a new controller.
Having your own PA is immensely liberating. You can market yourself to any college kids who throws house partys much easier. If you ARE a mobile DJ, I would strongly recommend PA over the NS6.
2 reasons why:
1. Any mobile DJ truly needs SOME sort of PA that they can rely on
2. The NS6 is too big to lug around.I have a MTP and two Harbinger APS 15″ Speakers. The MTP fits in my laptop bag and the Speakers fit in the back seat of my little 2-seater Firebird.
I also had a limitede budget, so I invested in PA first, and now -having the PA- I am making 20-50 bucks a night doing college house partys, and that income has allowed me to save enough money for a new controller.
-hope it helped 🙂

Participantthank you ! ill be doing some research on PA systems and prolly head to local audio center to find what I prefer. What controller(s) do you use?

MemberI would go speakers. I’m a college student too, and getting people to know you in that type of situation is important. It’s important to have sound instead of having a new controller. The crowd doesn’t care what controller you have, they just care the music sounds good. I have a Mixtrack Pro I use for all my gigs with 3 PA speakers, and it works great for me

ParticipantThanks ! I agree too that the speakers are prioritized before the controller. However with the Mixtrack Pro what software have you all been running? I’m still looking for a decent method of mix recording

I was originally using Virtual DJ Pro (which has a built in recorder and is great for that). But after it crashed 3 times at 2 different gigs, I switched to Serato Intro. So far, Serato has been great for me, but the Intro version doesn’t have a recorder built into it (I’m not sure if Serato Scratch has it or if the new Serato DJ will have it). I’ve been looking for ways to record my mixes too, but I haven’t found anything as far as software yet. I know there are some hardware options, but I don’t want to spend the movie if I don’t have to.

ParticipantSame situation for me ! I’ve been using Serato Intro (which so far has been excellent and never crashed) and I’ve considered splitting the output into my speakers and back into my computer to record, but it’s a work in progress. I’ve rode the fence on VDJ Pro since I began DJing and I feel like it may be a more wise choice to wait until I upgrade controllers and get the newer Serato.

Ya, that’s kinda where I’m at. I want to upgrade my controller and get the new Serato when it comes out. VDJ Pro did me well for a while, but I run it on a Mac and it’s just too unstable. I’ve been trying to look into recording programs to use. ( tried using Audacity to record my computers output and also using Virtual Djs recording feature to try and record, but to no avail.

ParticipantAs a current owner of an NS6, with no PA, id have to say it is relatively difficult getting gigs without renting speakers from a friend. Unless you plan on getting gigs at bars/clubs that have a PA, go with the speakers before upgrading. That way you can build your reputation and following in the community, which will lead to more gigs, more money, and eventually a controller upgrade.

ParticipantDJ Connibis,
IMHO you should go for the speakers first. Play a few gigs pay off your speakers then invest in the NS6. Having a Mixtrack Pro vs an NS6 won’t prevent you from getting gigs and the experience you need as a DJ, on the other hand the lack of a PA system will. Build your name in the local scene and get the experience. After some time and luck your money situation will change…

KeymasterI would never again invest into a PA system.
By the time you have a PA for 100 people in your basement you will get a gig for 200 people and fail misserably with your wattage.
Today there is such a huge amount of rental companies and most venues have PAs, that buying into them sounds to me like a huge fail.
I have a sound crew that I work with if anything fails, they have PAs from 100 people to 60k people venues for rent. (Basically only depends how much they put in their line arrays.)
I include that rental and setup fee into my DJ fee if the host needs me too and never got complaints. I know I can trust their gear, I have a guy from the sound crew to put everything up and make a soundcheck with me and I know he will get there and teardown -> transport it away again (which is good for my back as all I need to carry is my controller, laptop and some small stuff like headphones etc.).October 29, 2012 at 1:19 pm #30969Coltrane09
ParticipantIt appears that having a decent PA system seems to work out nicely for those who do college parties or gigs with less than 100 people. I guess having your own set up for those gigs with 100 people is very nice, and if need be rent a bigger PA set up for the gigs with 200+ ppl.
I’m also thinking about simply buying a nice set of PA speakers for small gigs, and if need be rent speakers for those bigger events.
In any event, what do you think Terry? If someone was to buy two 12″ or 15″ active PA’s and run them straight from their controller’s XLR is that a good investment for simply doing those small house parties, or are you still an advocate of simply renting all the way no matter how large or small the venue?

KeymasterI would still rent it, as you still had to compromise.
If I rent a PA for 100 people I will most likely get 2 15” actives and 1 or 2 subs with wattage for prolly 300 people. So I have loads of headroom and superior sound quality to anything I would buy for 100 people.
If you would go for that kind of PA for 100 people you would have to spend at least 1000 bucks.
Of course if you DJ weddings and you can get that kind of money for a single gig, then by all means buy it.
But think about how long it will take you to haul in the money through college parties that most likely wont pay you more than 200-300 bucks payout. I know having to spend prolly a hundret of that low money on PA renting is a hurting thing…
You have to decide where you want to go with this. Of course if your payout is even less per gig than renting wont cut it and you are investing in something that will not earn you anything anyways…October 30, 2012 at 1:45 pm #31031Coltrane09
