ParticipantIn addition, is 50Hz – 18kHz frequency range good for a lot of bass?
Would love some help
cheers

ParticipantThe sub-bass range is 20-40Hz, so starting at 50 will give you bass, but no sub-bass – however, you’ll still feel the thump from your kick. I cannot address if this is an issue, as my knowledge is technical, not practical… but the high end seems fine, it extends well into the ultra-high frequencies.
I dug up The Frequency Spectrum, Instrument Ranges and EQ Tips which I find very useful, that might also be useful to you (and others).

ParticipantI also find this interactive chart very cool and awesome.

ParticipantThanks for the response!
I understand it better now – the charts say the sub goes up to around 50-55 so should I be okay?
In terms of this – does it mean it won’t pick up bass lines that clearly below 50Hz?
Thanks

ParticipantWell, you’ll have harmonics above them, so I would guess that you should still generally be OK… it depends on the style you play, I reckon. If you play a style with a LOT of booming sub-bass, then that’s probably not the PA for you, but for the vast majority of styles, it is probably fine.

ParticipantOkay cool – and do you recommend any PA’s that can handle a lot of sub bass or a hifi system for that matter?
Here’s two songs to show the kind of style that will play – do you think that PA I listed could it handle it?

Thanks for your help so far

ModeratorOk. First of all, in the budget you mention, there is not much chance of getting a good PA, let alone something that will provide you with “lots of good bass”. Also the low end of cheap speakers is usually where you’ll most notice the (lack or) quality.
In PA the “rule” is: “you get what you pay for”.
Further more, in order to really feel the bass, you’d need a subwoofer. Here, even more than with full range speakers, getting good quality gear, is paramount to getting good results.
So, either rent pro-gear if people ask you to play at their parties or save up a bit. If you’ve saved up, there are some nice 2.1 (two small full range top speakers with one subwoofer) sets. Head over to the blog and look for the LD systems and HK audio systems.
Just my two cents of course.

ParticipantCheers for your words of advice 🙂
I do realise you get what you pay for – but I’m really only looking to get something that isn’t too expensive for I’d say quite small parties.
I’ve read the specs which state that they are 600W a piece, with a lowest frequency of 50Hz.
So – taking all that into consideration, alongside the two tracks which give a jist of the style, do you think these would do the job?
Thanks

ParticipantDefinitely sounds to me like there’s a whole lotta sub in your example tracks.

ParticipantWould you be able to provide a link to a PA or speakers that would be able to handle that then? haha
I’ve heard about Mackie Thumps, would they be alright?
Try to keep it low the price as low as possible thanks!

ModeratorFrankly, to answer that question a lot more questions need to be answered.
Type (class) of amplifier used: digital or analogue
Number of amplifiers: single or bi-amped
Type/quality of cross-over
Type/size/quality of drivers
Speaker “efficiency”
Max. loudness (SPL)There are a few more, but those are the most important.
Saying something is 600W in itself does not mean anything. 50Hz is relatively low for a full range speaker, but …. the lower you go the more power you need EXPONENTIALLY! Lower frequencies take up more power, which you’ll lose for midrange and high end (in single amp systems). And if you push a speaker to the edge, it will start to sound distorted over the entire frequency range.
Far as I know, this speaker comes from a chinese company that will sell it’s speakers to anybody that wants to slap their own brand sticker on it. Not much is spent in R&D (best case they’ll reverse engineer famous brands) or in quality of components.
Will they do the job. Sure, you will get sound/music out of them and if you can control yourself to not run them at max output they will not distort (much) hopefully. Will you be providing a high sound quality experience? I doubt it.

ModeratorThe new Thumps are actually a pretty good speaker. Good value for money in the lower end of the spectrum As the name Thump suggest, they have been designed with the idea of providing some decent bass in mind. Still, without a sub, you will not have the stomach-vibrating effect that you experience at a concert.

ParticipantAs you can probably tell by now, I’m not very knowledgeable with speakers etc. therefore I can’t give you a better explanation on that front. I wouldn’t say I’m going for quality that you get at concerts, being a student I want something to mess around with, that can go fairly loud and have enough bass for people to realise in a relatively small/medium room.
If you know of any other PA speakers similar to this or slightly more expensive, I’d love to know them 🙂 thanks again

ParticipantThe speakers I currently use – which do the job although they distort a fair bit at the higher volumes was 90W a piece with the same frequency (I think) as these ones. That’s why I’m kinda thinking these are pretty good just by those estimations
