In a studio environment the input is not that important. You can easily use RCA for your monitors it wont matter under 5m cable length and in a controlled environment.
The AV 40s are decent, but they are not monitors. They are good bang for the buck and you can easily enough train your DJing skills with them, but I would not recommend them for more.

The KRK Rockit line seems to be the best bang for the buck, when it comes to real monitors. They have a really good flat response in most areas and can even be used for production purposes. If you can afford them I would take them any day over the AV 40s.

I would not go below the AV 40s and in that price range they are the current winner.

Assuming that you might want to take them out sometime (when you start DJ-ing it just happens that friends will start to ask you to play at their parties :-)), you might want to get something you could use as small PA as well. Check out the Numark NPM-100. Very compact, very sturdy, 100W RMS (they are loud for their size) and can be mounted on a stand if need be.

They are by NO means monitor speakers, but small and rugged. Especially if you are setting up, taking down, setting up … etx. and you have to move them (to/from storage), anything with open fronts (i.e. you can touch the actual driver cone) is tricky and prone to damage.

I think pricewise they come to a little less a pair than the Rokit’s. As said, they are not monitors at studio quality, but actually more like the sound you’d hear when you play out 8-).

    Terry_42 & Chuck Van Eekelen,

Thank you for your quick responses and great advice.

Chuck, you raised a good point. If I do indeed make it outside of my four walls and do some house parties etc it would be good to take the speakers with me as part of a small setup. I use the word monitors as that seems to be the correct terminology but it seems I want some decent active portables speakers for bedroom use and possibly (fingers crossed :)) playing out. I’ll investigate the Numark speakers some more.

Thanks again to both of you for your help and advice.

Oh I’m also looking at the m Audio BX5’s any views on these for dual purpose?

I went to my friendly DJ shop and got myself a pair of the M Audio BX5 D2’s and very nice they are too. Great sound, very solid. I’m happy. Thanks for all the help again guys.

    cheers
