Every track is written in a specific key(or keys) which is basically a repetitive succession of seven notes.

Lets say there were two tracks written in the key of A minor, which means they play the same notes, only the timings are different. If you were to mix between these two tracks, it would be pretty smooth since they play within the same succession of notes.
