Well, I won’t knock him for using his JS fame to get into these massive international gigs. Lord knows my years of trying to perfect myself as a DJ did nothing in comparison with those who are simply known in a popularity sense.

The write-up sounds like any other testimonial I’ve seen to these poppy-DJ shows. I had DJ friends go see Afrojack at a concert hall recently, and they described it as that the mixing/DJing was nothing spectacular, but the crowd was mainly into the big splashes, breakdowns, and how much the over-the-top visuals synced with the music. The overall experience.

I won’t bash…because I’m pretty sure those Pauly D fans wouldn’t go see Sasha for 5 hours or check out an underground club or any DJ that doesn’t come with celebrity splash fame big light show.

I did get a kick out of the article.

He may not be the best DJ in the world but he loves DJing and is doing what he loves.

“somewhere, DJ Shadow shudders and doesn’t know why.” That part had me laughing so hard!! I could just imagine him sitting there eating a bowl of cereal in the morning and all of a sudden a chill goes down his spin and he looks around the empty room like “what the heck was that??” haha!!

Only thing I don’t understand is if he’s been at it for years, how has he not at least acquired a pinch of skill? I’m not expecting shifty madness from the man, but after 3 months of djing I’ve heard better sets. Does the man love djing, or simply love being the center of attention and uses djing as an outlet?

Some people just don’t wanna learn man.Quite a few ”DJs” here in serbia have no idea of what they’re doing and they’ve been calling them self DJs for years. It’s just the way some people are.

Sorry, but I don’t buy this excuse. I wasn’t going to say anything, but somebody liked this comment and there’s probably a lot of people who feel the same. Soooooo . . . . .

Just because you love doing something doesn’t mean you should do it in public.

I like to dance, but I’m a terrible dancer. So I just boogie around my living room to amuse my wife, or when I’m part of a crowded dance floor. But I definitely DO NOT dance around in public expecting people admire my “skillz.”

Even I did dance around in public like an idiot, I’m sure a big crowd would show up: a 6ft tall goofy Western guy dancing on the streets of China would be quite a novelty.

If a Chinese TV producer put me on a show, I could turn myself and my dancing into a circus sideshow with some success, like Pauly D does with his “DJing.” I could probably tour all over China and fill venues with crowds eager to see my “dancing.”

If most Chinese people had a fantasy of dancing on the streets like an idiot and getting away with it, perhaps my show would be a cultural phenomenon. But I wouldn’t ever think the people showing up to see me “dance” meant my abilities were anything close to those of a skilled ballet troupe getting far less attention.

For better or worse, the world of entertainment is full of people interested in creative pursuits, and people who seek attention. Sometimes you get people who do both, other times you get Pauly D. Don’t confuse attention-getting gimmicks, celebrity, and popularity for skill.

My bad for liking that previous comment, but I still stick by it. I don’t feel I am mistaking it for skill, as I know he isn’t a massively skilled DJ, but hey, I am not the best but I love DJing, and if I was offered a huge amount of money (and Pauly D gets a serious amount) to play and party every weekend.

Can’t say I would say no.

I’m inclined to say that your presence on the forum alone suggests you’re fairly passionate about the craft of DJing as well as the party aspect.

My problem with the man would be his ability, given the length of time he’s been in the game, suggests djing is only an outlet to be the center of attention and party, rather than a craft in-itself.

Yeah that’s fair enough to be honest. I’d imagine he has no time to practice though in between tanning and going to the gym, and maybe a couple of ladies thrown in there 🙂

I found that article rather fun to read and it would prolly be quite similar to my reactions if I ever went to one of his gigs.

    I’d cosign on this one.

I remember watching the first episode of Jersey Shore. Season 1. Pauly described himself as “your girlfriend’s favorite DJ”, which usually screams to me he’s about club chicks howling to the hits he’ll spoon feed and he’ll simply play towards club girls who are more attention nuts.

I don’t know how well he was doing as a DJ before Jersey Shore, but I do notice he had a tricked out crotch rocket and a nice car. Part of me wondered if he came from wealth.

I made the mistake of watching the very first episode of jersey shore, and Pauly D was billed as “the dj” back then – and his basic point about it was “all the girls want to go home with the DJ.” So, my guess is that he was just using it as a tool to score with girls and be popular then, and has just rolled with it as a paycheck ever since.
