I have to say that even when working out electronic music, I find myself playing with one of my guitars first to come up with the melody. Sometimes I write the notes down on paper sometimes I just keep the melody in my head and then go into Logic or maschine from there.
I guess you have to do what comes most naturally to you and does not stand in the way of your creativity and in music this is something else for everyone. I have met loads of producers and songwriters and worked with many, some successful, some not, but not a single one worked the same way. That is why this topic is so opinionated, but also basically “everyone is right” if their output is music and even if they only like it themselves…

I just wish the notation aspect of most (if not all) daws wasn’t so lackluster. This probably just stems from the fact I’m comfortable with sheet music but inexperienced with writing music in other mediums.

I guess that is simply because most DAWs cater to easier and easier workflow.
I still love Logic, but the latest releases were all catered towards the “newbie” experience with little pro features apart from candy (which we all like hehe).
This of course has good and bad sides, it gets more people with less knowledge about notation and harmony into music (and this is also how their end results sound).

One of the many things why I always tell people: If you want to start music making a little more serious than adding a few loops together, you have to at least have some basic understanding of music itself and hence harmonic music theory. Even if they just learn how basic scales, pitch etc. work and stop there. It will make folks leap ahead in many ways.

Just started (2 days ago) having a go at producing music.
Finding the whole lay out and synths unbelievably confusing.
Any tips to help with it all? Or is it just time served. I am doing the OD course, but making my way through it slowly.

I have a background on drums, guitar and piano / keyboard.
Is there a good piece of hardware to make things easier? As the trackpad on a MacBook isn’t the easiest thing to work with

Yeah, at the very least I have a usb mouse, ideally I’m working with my m-audio key studio. I’m in no position to help (still working on being able to input tempo and note through keyboard alone, instead of having to set the note length before I hit it)
