haha aight I think I got a good mix to submit. Im actually really happy, proud, and excited to hear this for myself too. In my two months DJ’ing Im confident this is my best work to date.

    lmk what u guys think.

I was really inspired by vineoaks mix and liked his mix alot. so I stuck with the trance theme even though thats not really my forte.

thanks for your mix bigchips.ill give some tips and some criticisms so dont be offended,as i know trance isnt your fav music genre.track listings are a must and bpms shown are helpful for the purpose of the mix challenge(128-140 bpms in 7 track challenge).thats my 1st point.secondly i think your mix was too vocal orientated.i listened 2 times.once with my clubbing head on and then my dj head.you can obviously mix tracks but your prep needs improvement.some tracks are not in key(i suggest mixed in key and cross reference with mixmeister fusion pro).this works for me on my prep.also check your master output as volume seems to increase over certain tracks.another point, you seemed to have a lot a tracks in such a short mix.i suggest play some 7 min tracks in middle to pad out the mix.the intro was ok but then i suggest get something more punchy with some bangin bass.overall not a bad effort.hope these tips help.

edit:i suggest you listen to this mix for the structure i use.my personal choice but a guide for you bigchips.

Do we have to stick with the 128 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 format? Or can we play around with it a little more? I personally go from moombahton to dubstep a lot, and do a lot of 110-140 switches.

well the parameters of my mix were 128-130-132-134-136-138-140.there is now other restrictions to this otherwise.you can cross genre.what you put in the pudding is up to you.if the pudding turns out ok then yummie lol

edit:you can post other bpms but in same format,eg 110,112,114 etc(7 tracks but must have track list and bpms shown)

lol yeah after listening to it I could tell. I tried to stick within keys but eventually threw that out the window when I couldn’t figure out the right mixes or get the songs I wanted in there. the overall library is pretty limited and thats extra true for my trance library.

thanks for the criticism and giving it to me straight. you mentioned the volume control, thats been something I have been trying to teach myself but can’t really figure it out. im using virtual dj, any tips, pointers or links you give there?

thanks manhattan, thats definately the feel I was going for 😀

i like to use the analogy of a dj being like a michelin 4 star chef.here goes.ill explain what i mean.a master chef will first have an idea of his menu and what is needed to create this.first he will source his ingredients, gauge quantities and add his own flavours to make a unique dish.what has this got to do with djing you say!!.

well its about preparation.80% of a chefs dish is about preparation, before he even turns on the hobs and ovens.
a dj sourcing his ingredients is the tunes.
first:the menu=the idea of what you mix is gonna be(trance/dubstep/house).
    second.poor tune selection=poor ingredients
thirdly:quantities of ingredients reqd=length of each track.
fourth:and very important is the flavouring=getting bpms and keycodes right.too much/less can spoil the flavour of the mix.

now that you have your preparation done we can no concoct your creation.

this bit is all about timing.a good chef adds the ingredients in a certain order and has his ovens at the correct temperature.this applies to mixing.add your bass/vocals at the right moments and dont overcook it.now that you have things cooking.keep an eye on your timings.when happy that your creation is complete.then serve up.

if the mix is done correctly then i should hit the punters pallette.

just another point,a master chef and a poor cook can have the same ingredients, but its the prep and the skills to put the stuff together that makes the master chef.only hard work and practice can do the last 20%.the preparation is the easy bit

    thanks

It’s funny that I stumbled upon this post because this is what I did in my latest mix for a competition. I wanted to show off my versatility so I started with 122 bpm house and ended with 175 drum & bass in 25 minutes. It’s 14 tracks instead of 7 but the principle is the same. I meant to pull it off so you can’t tell the tempo is increasing. Thoughts?

What type of music is between 130-140? I usually stop at around 130. Then Dubstep at 140. Can you half the bpm so we can play hiphop maybe?
