Participantl also agree with D.J.Manhattan ; he has some good arguments. It’s all about the music & the enjoying of it.
But there be alway’s “vinylpurists” (have Dj’ed myself with vinyl in the past). who are claiming that digital a Dj with a controller is a “fake Dj”. (let them be, i should say)January 22, 2012 at 1:12 am #13141Arthur Kokanov
ParticipantWhats cool about digital it think is that it gives so much more option… It is just evolution of music and it lets you do sooo much more and faster too then you can do with Vinyl. I am super excited for this age of dj’s myself included. We will make some rocken music.

MemberWhat a great video, I agree with this guy. I don’t think it matters as to what you use for Djing, as long as you love the music and you can make the crowd dance.

Memberthis has been bouncing around a lot on facebook lately.
I like the commuter metaphor for the vinyl/digital argument.
I don’t like defending what guetta does/did though. Yeah we all want to be the guy playing to stadiums and thousands of people. That’s why it pisses us off to see a guy not even mixing who’s reached that goal. That’s why the “mainstream” DJ’s get a bad reputation, because of people like guetta. A lot of people don’t like deadmau5, they call him mainstream. He plays his shows live, he doesn’t let the fame go to his head, I have a lot of respect for the guy for those reasons. It’s unfortunate that mainstream is such a blanket term.“I play other peoples music better than you do.” Well that just undermines everything DJing is. If you’re just fading from track to track at the beginning and the end of each song that argument would make sense. But I really hope that’s not all you’re doing. The difference between a good DJ and a bad one is playing other peoples music better than someone else. So I don’t really get where he was going with that one.

I dont’ know where to start…. UHmm, last year, Dancevalley (one of the biggest dance festivals), Steve Angello. Same thing happend as the whole Guetta story. Angello was the main stage closing act and played for 1,5 hour in front of 30 thousand people. Somebody made a video of the last 15 minutes and you could obviously see he wasn’t mixing. People got mad on forums like this one blablabla. The thing is, with shows of this size, it’s impossible to do it live. There isn’t one lightguy on this planet that can control, movingheads, lasers, fireworks, smoke, led and all that stuff at the same time. So thats why Angello recorded the last 25 minutes of his set. Months before the festival, he send it to the organization and they made a big show around it.
The point I want to make: at ‘mainstream’ events with ten thousand + capacity, 95% of the visitors doesn’t give a **** about or the dj is playing live, vinyl, or on cassette decks. They just want to hear the big hits and wanna be stunned by light effects and fireworks. That’s why they visite the festival. Is that wrong? Who are we to judge.
And I’m sorry, but Deadmau5 isn’t playing live on his big shows and Guetta doesn’t produce his own tracks.

MemberHe has some points, the first video BUT……
Im not judging anyone….but as some people shout to retain their right to like Guetta…….I retain my right to say that I believe he sucks, and he contributes to the death of real, inspiring, entertaining electronic music! I retain my right to say that electronic dance music didnt get bigger because of Guetta because what Guetta promotes is NOT (for my personal definition) electronic-club-dance music, and its not even house – its pop! And pop was always borrowing elements from other more underground genres, but it was always apparent when it was pop!
I dont have a problem with pop (besides not liking it)! Maybe some other people have a problem with it and thats why they “baptize” it as something else! Are yo so ashamed of your choice to like pop? I wouldnt be! Im not ashamed of the genres I like to listen! Im not judging you! You just take it as granted that pop is a shit genre – when you dont accept it by that name and “baptize” it club-electro-urban-house-pop-guetta-thingy or whatever the hell name you create. By the way I loooooooooved Nelly Furtado’s “Say it right”…I really did…I LOVED ITTTTTTTTT! Its a brilliant, most musical tune – recent gem in the vast shit ocean of pop I remember, there were more in the past. Production wise? It was shitty as hell, distorted as a broken amp, but still its musicality gave me goose bumps. See? Im not prejudiced – I just generally dont like pop – but there are exceptions – Guetta is not one of them sorry!
And yeah the crooooooooowds that went to listen to Guetta dont pay attention to whether he is really playing or not! But guess what, dumbshit, I do and thats why I wasnt there! Me and the rest of the planet that wasnt there! Should I also be forced to like Spice Girls because “people were there and they were having fun”…..Good for them! I dont have fun that way, sorry for not fitting into your scheme of things. STOP TELLING ME what to like! Period!
Cool! Im glad you are free to keep your opinion…..and I hope Im free to keep mine without being accused of being an “elitist”, a “purist” or a “high heels snob” which you are used to calling anyone with a different taste from yours….geeee!
that was my rant! Thanks for baring with me!

MemberPS: i found iceman’s rant way more honest and educated! But maybe thats just me, cos Im not like everyone else on planet earth, I cant stand to listen to Guetta music! My ears bleed!

Memberdeadmau5 takes his synths with him, if he passes out on stage the show stops. I’ve been to 2 of his shows and you could tell he was playing live. As for his unplugged sets who can say, but he doesn’t even classify himself as a DJ. Seen his light show recently? Pretty technical if you ask me. You can still plan a set without miming it.
I don’t go to shows to see awesome visuals, they are a bonus. The first time I saw deadmau5 there was nothing more than a few tv screens with some basic patterns flashing on them. That remains the best show I’ve ever been to. I also saw Paul Van Dyk a few years ago, considering his level of fame the stage should have been incredible. Nope, 3 TVs and a few LED strips. I’ve since been to shows with lasers, flame cannons, massive screens, all manner of visual trickery. That’s cool and all, but I’m there for the music first everything else second.
I’ve never bought the lighting excuse. Rock bands have had pyrotechnics for years. They don’t mime it just so the lights flash at the right time. I don’t understand why DJing has to be any different.

MemberThis video was definitely entertaining & had some valid points.
I sorta understand why the big name DJ/Producers like Guetta, Deadmau5, etc don’t DJ live. DJ’ing doesn’t have much of a visual element similar to what a rock band does. Put a DJ in a massive venue and it’s worse because everything has to be larger than life as far as a visual. So these guys like Guetta have a choice where they can mix live with no visual or they can sacrifice mixing live for a visual element to their show ….probably an easy choice too because most people don’t care about mixing skill but they do care about a well rounded production that includes audio & visual. Coordinating lighting, pyro, etc requires a pre-planned set; this is the same for bands in that they have a setlist w/ predefined visuals…. I doubt KISS is making changes on the fly to their set similar to what limitations get put on the DJ/Producers who want visuals.

MemberWhen the show gets really big, they have to do it. All the big artists are getting something to do with it at a certain time. For what I know Deadmeau did a tour last year (or is still doing this tour I’m not sure) and that one is rehearsed for something like 75% of the show. Making the show, decor etc, costs a couple million dollars, so you have to get everything right and I don’t think that’s wrong.
At smaller parties, for instance the one that you describe, he for sure have played live. The only thing I want to make clear is that the show becomes to big sometimes and then you’ve to record some stuff. I don’t think it is al problem.

MemberThe kid in the top video is just plain irritating . Iceman has valid points, he echos what and why I bitch about today’s generation of wanna be dj’s. I also agree what he said about medium not making a difference. I’m still a vinyl junkie, but if someone chooses to spin via other mediums and has skill , and more imporantly… humility with the proper intention (love for the people & scene ) and are not in it for selfish fame/$$$ motivations ..then they have my respect.
