Four channels are nice, but not essential. There’s also the 2+2 option, which is what I use. This means you have two channels, but you can switch. This for me is enough. I have never needed more than two channel controls all at once.

Yes, can you put the question into perspective. What kind of DJ-ing, what kind of 4-channel (midi only or stand-alone mixing capability)?

Well most people I see use 2 channels and if they have a 4 channel controller they simply use the other 2 decks for staging songs and switching back and forth.
Real 4 channel mixing I see very rarely and I have to say that I do it myself very rarely.
A good valid use however what i find myself doing a lot if I play a hip hop gig is that I load tracks into deck 1 and 2 and have scratch patterns in deck 3 and 4 and actually mix between them.

I use a 4 channel controller, Denon MC6000, with Traktor Pro and I have Channels 1 & 4 set to my back up devices such as two Denon CD Players (DNS1200s) or 1 DNS1200 and an iPod. Channels 2 & 3 are set to midi control and used with Traktor’s decks. It makes life easier for me especially since the Denon MC6000 can work as a stand alone mixer in case my laptop fails.

Pretty much one of my setups, although i’ll usually take the 2900s with me.

Looking into my first controller like to do some mixing and a little scratching in time. Was going to wait until June and pick up the Reloop Beatmix 4 since it has full version of Serato included but didn’t know if I need 4 channels

Even if you don’t need it now, at the price and with FULL Serato, I’d still be getting that one 🙂

I have a Kontrol S4. I use 3 channels for tracks and one for a remix deck to add loops/samples. So technically 4-decks? I use the 3rd deck to keep a scratch sentence at the ready and just in case I have to plug something in as a backup.
Using all four could be useful if you’re doing live mashups or even attempting to burn through songs at ludicrous speed! (Don’t know why you’d ever do that though)

Kontrol S4 here, depending on what I’m doing:

Studio Mix: 2 channels for digital mixing, the other 2 channels are hooked up to the 1210’s for straight vinyl.
Radio Shows: 2 channels for digital mixing, 1 ch for mic, 1 ch for voiceovers/3rd track cue.
Gigs: 4 channels available for digital mixing – very rarely 4 ch mixing, 3 tops, 4th for accapella use.

I must admit I find having four dedicated channels very useful indeed and if someone starting out can afford a 4 ch controller/mixer, I would suggest it – cost effective in the longer term imho.
