Well, Ive listened to plenty of it; I have never mixed it though. And Ill know a group of people there, Mainly all the girls. I probably wont know any of the guys. (I know the sorority girls, I dont know the Frat guys)

MemberCause this would be my suggestion… if it’s a friendly gig as in you know the girl and some of the people at the party I would do it, it’s a fun time (sorority, like, duh?), and you get some exposure with a crowd that matters (again sorority girls) if you plan on playing out at clubs, and if your friendly with them they could understand you not knowing the genre but will still appreciate a good time… but it depends on how comfortable you would be… like I’m not the most into hip hop guy I know but I could get by at a party playing oldies (regulators, NWA, tone loc, baby got back – always goes over well) or newer lil jon type stuff and most hip hop crowds don’t care about “clean” mixes plus I could still throw in some remixes or mashups that I like.
One thing about requests though… if you don’t know the genre I assume you won’t have a very big library of it so I would take them but make it known you might not have it, unless I’m wrong about your collection. 😉
Good luck!

MemberThanks again Gre! So I told her Ya I would do it. I figure that I can actually have fun with it because I do enjoy the music that she wants me to play. I met her at a party this last Saturday and the “rap” she actually meant was the R&B and Hip Hop that is played on the radio. I can easily get a collection of that and use it, so it should be good times.
Plus, I figure once they get nice and drunk I can just play what ever I want. I do have this Dance playlist I am DIEING to let loose.
Ill let ya know how it goes!

MemberNot sure if you’re a fan of Moombahton, but there are some sick remixes of older, early/mid-2000s rap e.g. http://hypem.com/#!/item/1dypd/Real+Juicy+-+Badd+Moombahton+Bitch+%28Mike+Jones+x+DFace%29
The girls just want something they know or are familiar with. It can literally come in any package, and they’ll still
flip out. I’d maybe think about mash-ups and electro/genre remixes, especially if it’s dancey.November 14, 2011 at 8:10 pm #9839DJ GRE
Memberoh hell yeah… Girl talk tracks go down amazingly well with girls.

Exactly. She meant music like tyga and Big sean. I got a good collection of it so I should be ok.
TWIST in the situation. The theme of the party? Rave. Seriously? HUGE face palm

MemberActually, if you are planning to make your name known and if you are after “branding”, and if rap is not your thing, I would advise you to not play – even if it all turns out ok, lets say it goes perfect, are you sure you want your name-brand to also be associated with rap? If of course, your branding target is “DJ who plays what the occasion demands” then go for it – its just that “usually” house, techno, trance DJs create a name that is associated with the specifif genres they play. And at least where I come from, no promoter of raves will call a guy to play if he has been associated with anything other than “rave” music – so rap might be a mistake for you.
*I grew up listening to hip-hop and rap, dont think Im saying the above because of disliking the genre, actually I do like the old school stuff like Cypress and Wu-Tang and all that*

I agree with this completely. However, I figure its a small enough thing and I will know a good majority of the people there to the point that I can just play it. I want EDM to be associated with my name however, I totally agree with that statement. But I figure also that I can also play the music I’m used to and kind of make it known thats what Im best at. For example, do a 4 on 4 thing kind of deal with EDM/Hip hop.

The girl wants mashups (e.g. Big Sean over an Avicii track everyone knows) and remixes like the discofries remix of Good Feeling by Flo-rida. Not that confusing.
