MemberI wonder the same thing. I wont see myself using turntables but still wonder why most djs use serato. I dont see myself switching from Traktor

MemberYeah same here and once I started paying attention I always thought I’d see traktor scratch out more often since it seems like it is more flexible than serato – but again my information on it is really limited and I might be missing something.

MemberYea I havent touched serato. I did see DJ Jazzy Jeff use traktor scratch which was epic since he always used serato.

I see a lot of djs in big clubs running it… and I don’t doubt that it is a great software, different from others but good in it’s own right. My question is this: What is it that makes Serato such a club favorite? Just curious as I’ve never personally dealt with the software. Any djs currently using or that have used it please voice your thoughts and feelings!
Serato SSL (as opposed to ITCH) has video support. Also it is arguably simpler and so easier to use – so for the vinyl-loving DJ moving to a scratch product, it will be less intimidating (Traktor is undeniably complicated).

MemberAhhh… the video support makes sense now that I think about it. As a personal preference do you use Serato Phil?

I’m a controller DJ, I don’t use DVS, and I use Serato ITCH and Traktor (and VDJ!), but personally, mainly ITCH because I love the VCI-300 for day-to-day DJing.

ParticipantIn the past, SSL gained a lot of popularity because it was the most solid and stable of all the DVS titles. Final Scratch had fallen and some were reluctant on Traktor Scratch because of the Final Scratch thing. Torq was unfortunately giving many users problems.
The people I’ve seen who really love Serato are the vinyl purists. They like how the vinyl control works perfectly and thus gives them the power of software while playing vinyl. I know some like Phil love ITCH, but my observations are that the Serato fans simply wanted to say on vinyl and keep it simple.
I do think though that Traktor has moved into the #1 spot based on the amount of controllers and DJs I see using it.

MemberIMHO a lot of “classic” DJs are attracted to Serato because it differs the least from using a regular setup.. you can literally use your laptop just as a very big CD case if you want..

ParticipantD-Jam, that is EXACTLY why I switched from Final Scratch to ScratchLive. I was struggling to decide which way I was going to go but some contributing factors to my decision were mainly the reputation of stability, vinyl emulation, ease of use in any CD deck environment (ie Denon 2000 dual decks in relative mode) and the fact that 98% of my colleagues in my inner circle of DJ friends were using Serato. Endorsements go a long way that’s for sure.

MemberI am Currently a Traktor pro user…. i started using Virtual Dj, Changed to traktor pro, no more then 6 month ago, I currently love it but there’s always a question in my head why 90% the Clubs that i go to the dj is using SERATO! i understand that its Video enable but….. i see no big difference, so the question is if i get a gig at a Club i need to be using Serato? and Why?. i do not scratch, so i would like for a Serato user to tell me Why they love Serato?

MemberI think the style of play really dictates the kind of set-up too. I use Serato Scratch Live and i am happy with it…for now.
I’m from the two decks and a mixer era. I play a mostly hip-hop, r & B, afro-pop and top-40 dance/pop. I dont use too many effects nor juggle cue points Ean Golden style. Just nice tight blends, chops and stabs, baby scratch, back spins, a lil beat juggling and loads of EQ-ing.
I just let the music play and my “effects” will really be the kind of music i play. Playing a tune that will make the crowd go “Ape” is really an effect too.
When i initially moved to software I tried PC DJ which i didnt really have any idea of what they were trying to do, then Virtual DJ which i used for about 2-3 years playing straight from my laptop without any controllers or decks. Thats the simplest effective Set-up ever. Then i tried Traktor Pro for a few weeks but it just looks like some hi-tech NASA space control program to me, so much stuff to do on it. I still have them all except PC DJ.
Then i bought Serato even without trying it out. I find the Serato layout to be simple and enough for me. I dont mind the fact that i have to still use my pitch control to beatmatch its part of the game. I even bought a Kontrol X1 to use with it and to me that has opened up the Digital DJ in me to another level. I love my turntables to death.
I believe flexibility is the key for any DJ. Know your Set-Up but also have a basic or good enough idea about the alternatives.
The people dont care if you use Serato nor Vinyls all they want to do is have a good time.

I do think though that Traktor has moved into the #1 spot based on the amount of controllers and DJs I see using it.Basically this. Traktor’s gaining a LOT of support with their massive internet ad campaigns, and here in Barcelona I see it everywhere, but mostly used as a DVS with vinyl.

I think Serato’s rise to fame was from what D-Jam and a few others said about DVS setups and using vinyl but I also think it’s because it shipped and still ships with alot of the hardware that clubs and DJs would employ… I could be wrong, don’t quote me but from what I’ve seen with packages and the like it seems to be the case.
Nowadays you’d see the likes of Traktor and and other titles because they jumped on the bundling wagon. Also it would kind of seem like a commonsense thing to learn/stick with if you have/had someone teach you the ropes of DJing using SSL or if you get booked at a club with it’s own setup and they have Serato boxes/Rane mixers or other mixers fashioned for Serato usage :/ would save you alot of setup time if the software YOU like clashes with the setup you have to use.
*shrug*

ParticipantI notice some clubs try to be proprietary in hardware, but many more simply are installing systems into the booth for DJs to come in and hook up extra stuff with ease. Like outlets with RCA connections on them.

I’ve seen it suggested that Serato is mostly used in the US, while Traktor Scratch is preferred in Europe (I don’t know this to be true). The suggested reason was that there are more Hip-Hop DJs in the US.
I’m from New Zealand, and could probably be considered a traitor because I use TSP and not SSL :$
