MemberTo be honest mate, youre wading into very dangerous waters.
You could probably get some labels to agree to the exposure for a small share of the profits. But then you’ll get some that try to shut you down in a heartbeat.
What happens when youve got your carefully crafted mix nailed down and one or more of the companies decides they dont want to participate in your compilation CD? You cant include that song, so its back to the drawing board.
To be honest, its not worth the effort youre gonna have to put in to get something like this past the legal team of every single label who’s music you use.
My advice; Keep your mixes free, invest your time into something else that will make you real money. Like your education or something :p

MemberThanks for your reply 🙂
I don’t wanna take a mix that I have already done but I was thinking maybe you can choose tracks from a list a label show you and then record your mix from that list ?
I mean, I listen to some compil such as Anjunadeep, Purobeach or Hedkandi and I was wondering how it happens ? Artists haven’t signed exclusively on this label, have they ?August 18, 2011 at 12:02 pm #5973Howitzer
MemberThe big compilation CD’s about more than likely aquire the rights from the individual publishers, I do not know for certain though.
They do have a lot of leway with this because these complations are published on well known labels with a massive demographic and a large distribution network. I’m assuming you dont have that, so you dont have the industry clout or the financial incentive to get these guys to play ball.
Give it a try though, whats the worst that can happen? They say no?
Good luck!August 18, 2011 at 3:54 pm #5980Emma Partnow

This is my first post, I searched for the same kind of topic but didn’t find one, so if there is please excuse me and send me the link, thanks !
I was wondering how do you do to make and sell your own CD mixed compilation ? I mean about the rights of course, do you need to work with a label that owns the rights ?
I have a website http://www.micromix.fr where I post my (and a friend of mine’s) mixtapes. We don’t do this for money and we’ll keep it like this but I think we’d be glad one day maybe to have a nice physic CD, you know a good selection that we mixed carefully, and with a beautiful cover, etc. Do it legally to eventually promote and pay the artists would be a good thank you reward… I already buy as much CDs and mp3 as I can when I love these artists but I’d like to be able one day to sell at least one CD with all these artists that I like to play !
anyway, thanks for your replies 🙂
cheers !PS : this is the first time I see such a well done forum ! 😀 Everything with the UX is well thought ! what’s the name of this forum engine please ?
Hello Kazes 🙂
Not All Signed Tracks are Brilliant;
There are Many (that I have found) on Soundcloud that are Free for Download; and are Excellent; and Every Artist who has put their Material Up for Free Download has Always been Willing for me to Distribute their Material (as long as I give them a Mention; which I Obviously do in the Track Listing);
For a CD Compilation I would be looking along this Route; as although it would be Great to Sell your CD on the Back of Big Names (making the CD More Saleable I Presume); you will Not get say 20 Record Companies to Agree to their Material being Published Elsewhere Unless you are a Massive DJ Name (Unfortunately);
There are Many Big Names coming out of Soundcloud (who are Now Signed); who Previously allowed their Tracks to be Downloaded for Free; and it is these Tracks (if Any Good); I would be looking at 😎August 18, 2011 at 4:24 pm #5982kazes
MemberHi Emma Partnow !
you made a point because I guess I’m playing more “underground” tracks that are actually not signed…
In fact, if it would be only me, I wouldn’t care selling the CD and would give it for free :pI don’t want to make money but just want to to it legally, just once 🙂
I think you’re right I should ask each artist I want to play in this compil. I shall choose not big artists so it would be a promotion for them too ! It’s all about negociation and maybe … sign a paper together to seal the agreement. Just in case 😉

Hello Kazes 🙂
Yes; that is a Great Route to Follow;
I just send the Artist a Message on Soundcloud and ask them if they would Allow me to Promote Their Material on my Radio Show (in your Case On Your Compilation CD); and Every One Of Them Have Agreed; and have also gone on to then sending me Private and Exclusive Tracks (which is Really Great);
And to be Truthful; in a few of my DJ Sets that I have Not Aired Live; I have used Artists Material Without Their Permission (the Free Downloaded Tracks); but then the Actual Artists come onto the DJ Set and Thank Me for Using their Material; which is Awesome :);
And in my Most Recent Remix; again I didn’t ask for the Artists Permission; but he Heard it; and said he thought it was Brilliant; and I am now Working with him Personally on Collaborative Projects 😎
But if you are going to make any Money from your CD; then Signing a Paper With The Artist Would Be Perfect 🙂August 18, 2011 at 6:09 pm #5985D-Jam
ParticipantI wouldn’t bother with CDs. Most of it all is digital now.
Also, it’s hard to push a mix compilation if you’re not a big name. Many run out to buy something like Vonyc Sessions because it’s a big name DJ and most likely loads of tracks no one’s heard.
If you produce, then many will make mixes mainly containing their stuff and stuff from their label as a means to promote their stuff.
If you’re just a DJ, and you really want to sell CDs, then the legal way is to pick out tunes you want to use, contact their labels and find out how you can get permission. Be careful if you think you can use someone’s free remix off Soundcloud. Maybe he can’t sell that track because he used someone else’s work, but the same goes for you if you put out a CD for sale containing that track. “Dave’s Bedroom Remix” of a Beyonce track is still a Beyonce track…and she can sue you.
You have to be careful too. If you’re a “no name” the labels just might tell you “no” and forbid you to use their stuff under any circumstance. They see you then as a small player and thus not worth their time.
The illegal way is just to make them, press them, and sell them in local privately-owned stores that sell them. I don’t see any of those exist anymore since everyone downloads now.
Personally, just make demos. If you want to sell stuff, then produce music and sell it. Start a label, get a bunch of guys on Beatport under your label, then put out a mix compilation with stuff from the label.

Member10 Years ago it cost about £400 to set up your Own Label and Publishing Company;
And although I Agree Most (if you were to go this Route) Music Is Digital now; a Number of Record Companies Will Not Accept your Submission ‘Unless’ it is on CD;
And I Wasn’t For A Moment Suggesting that you Use ‘Remixes’ for your CD;
I would ‘Only Use’ Original Material; but as I said; a Great Number of these are Excellent;
And I wouldn’t For A moment Suggest Using a ‘Beyonce’ Remix; Who Would Want One Of Those Anyway 😮August 19, 2011 at 8:28 am #5991kazes
MemberThanks for your replies, it makes me think about this more easily and gives me ideas about how to contact some french artists that I know and maybe make a modest compilation with them (and their original material) 🙂

Bahaha 🙂 Nicely said, Emma, made me laugh.
Kazes, I’d grab a hold of those artists you know and work with them to get all of you famous 😛 That’s sorta my plan at the moment. Make contacts, promote them, they promote me, everyone starts getting their name out a bit.
