MemberI got absolutely nothin’ left from the old days apart from about 30 or so vinyl 12″ … oh and a few videos on you tube from some of the warehouses, and Southport beach. Also theres a handful of fotos on facebook of the Easter Sunday walk up the highest hill round here everyone does – It was the day after we all did Back to Basics in Leeds so i cant understand why we are all wearing sun glasses
And a few good memories!July 28, 2011 at 1:28 pm #4838dj Architekt

ParticipantIn the beginning I just used to make personalized cassettes for friends. Total trainwrecking on the blends though since I had no clue what I was doing.
First time I ever made one cassette and handed out multiple copies I called it “Club Underground”. I drew an image or an open manhole cover and the idea of a party underground. I think this was 1993.

MemberTrust me Phil, it wouldnt be nowhere near as bad as me when i first started i shudder with embarrassment thinking back to the first time i was unleashed on a pair of turntables with big ideas and zero talent to back ’em up

MemberMy first mix was made using a double tape deck – no mixing whatsoever. However there was a lot of skill in pressing the Pause button at exactly the right time so as to get it on the beat.

ParticipantI loaned my first mixtape out to a “friend” and never saw it again. 😡
That was late ’83. I kick myself everytime I think about it. I do , however, have a couple left from about ’87 lying around. Those I digitized and uploaded to my domain. Just in case anyone wants a laugh.July 30, 2011 at 8:21 pm #1001244Emma Partnow

I FINALLY get my first controller in the mail tomorrow and i’m going to connect it and just jump straight into recording my absolute first real mix. I feel like the biggest nerd right now! Did any of you feel this way (I’m talking stupid excited) when you did your first mix?!
Yes; I still have my First Mixtape; which was an Hour Set on Cassette; which I had Professionally Mastered; and all Inserts Printed; which I then sent to Radio Stations and Clubs in the UK;
I also still have the Letters I received back from the Radio Stations and Clubs that Actually Listened to the Tape;
And a Couple of the Letters were just So Amazing I had them Framed;
Obviously I listen to it now (having only just found the Last Remaining Copy in 2010); and would Mix some of it Differently; but it is Wonderful to Hold that Small Piece Of History 🙂July 31, 2011 at 1:53 am #4942IndigoDeviLLe
MemberWhen I made my first mixtape, I made a lot of copies and give them to my families and friends. Felt so great and thinking it was like my biggest achievement.
Now listening back to it, I just feel “Eerrr…” and “Eeeuuwww…” LOL
Thinking back, I really appreciate the supports they gave back then. They probably felt ‘Eerrr’ and ‘Eeeuuwww…’ too when listening to it, but instead they still gave me their positive and supportive comments. 🙂January 21, 2012 at 7:52 pm #13127Dj Neonglass

My first mixtape (with vinyl) i made in 1978 by recording my set on a big reeel taperecorder.
Also made mashups with that big reeel taperecorder by cutting & pasting the audiotape by hand,with a special press.Before that recording i had practising mixing vinyl for almost a year.
(But i have to do it 8 times over & over again, till i was finally 98 % satisfied about my mix)Later with a cassette recorder i began to create customised pause button mixes ,as i realised that certain records could be made more suitable for the dance floor, if they when given a slight twist of extension.
All these mixtapes where broadcasted on FM by our Illegal Radio station.
Looking back, i’m glad that i’ve quit Dj-ing with vinyl & CD & switched over to digital.
(and i never want to go “back” again)January 25, 2012 at 1:19 am #1002690IznremiX

ParticipantMy first recorded mixes were a set of three, titled the charty choons, the hard house hits, and the techno trax. All were recorded around late 1999/early 2000.
Charty choons – side 1 had tracks like phats & small – turn around, Pete Heller – Big Love, and Armand Van Helden – You don’t know me. Side 2 had me messing around with two copies of run dmc – it’s like that, wildchild – renegade master, and wiseguys – ooh la la, before going into some drum & bass
Hard house hits – side 1 featured tracks like Camisra – let me show you, and side 2 was mostly tracks on tidy trax/tripoli trax.
Techno trax – perhaps not pure techno, but included hardfloor – beavis at bat (dave angel remix), beta blocker – the ultimate, DJ Misjah – access, Virus – Moon.
I think the tracks would sound very dated now, but was mostly happy with the beatmatching and the blending.

MemberFirst Set I ever recorded was me messing around for 3 hours, so I don’t expect anyone wants to hear that…
But the second one however, where I actually tried to make it decent, produced this: http://i.mixcloud.com/CXI2s
And I still listen to it 🙂
