If you’re novice don’t consider it just yet. Instead, use that same money to invest in lights or more advanced sound systems.

I disagree. Investment in lights for a beginner is bogus, so is a PA system. For your first gigs things can be rented or will be at the venue anyways. Yes it will cost you a little from your income to make it work, but it is safer than investing, then deciding you like club DJing more and then sitting on some lights (as light resale is really bad…).

I agree investing in some good monitor speakers is a good idea, as it will make you more sensitive to what you do. Then investing in Serato DJ is a good idea. It is a much more complete DJ software and it works excellent with the Mixtrack Pro II. You can easily prolong the life of the mixtrack II by adding a cheap 50 bucks midi button box to map the functions you need to add (if any). Also when you transition to a more complex Serato DJ controller you will already know the software in and out and there will be less transitioning pain, as the new controller will simply open up more options for you.

Lights and PA are if you want to be a mobile/wedding DJ.

If you’re more looking to play in clubs or raves, then get the sound and full software.

Even as a wedding/party DJ, I’d still go with rented gear until you can afford a high quality PA. And lights … well, totally different story.

    Hi Olly,

I might be able to advise as I was in identical situation a few weeks back.

I also got a Mixtrack Pro II, which I love and was amazed at the price (at the time I didn’t know I would need to upgrade software to get what I need). I started playing with the Intro software and I think it is actually OK, but it really depends on what you are going to do. If you want to do serious club style mixing with tight sets and develop your talent at mixing seemlessly then I think it is essential to be able to record what you are doing for a number of reasons.

DJ Intro does not support recording, so your sets go forever unless you set up a clever way of doing it using something like audacity, but that can be a pain and depending on soundcards in computers and specs you can get lag and other issues.

So, if recording is important it is a must purchase IMHO. If you just want to DJ at weddings and more casual music events where you don’t need to finely tune your skills, then you may just be fine with Intro.

I’m in a similar boat, and looking into what I’d gain with the MTP2 and the software upgrade… I’m looking to eventually get something like the DDJ-SR, and if I upgrade now I pay twice to get the full Serato DJ program… I think I’m going to just learn as much as I can with the MTP2 as it came out of the box… unless I find a mapping and info that makes me think otherwise…. but I don’t plan on keeping the MTP2 for many gigs, as the cue volume isn’t loud enough… kind of wishing I hadn’t fallen for the pads and had gotten the Denon MC2000, or that the DDJ-SB had been out then… seems like using it with the full Serato DJ was thought out more… don’t get me wrong, I love the mixtrack and serato intro… it’s lots of fun and I’m learning a lot… I’m sure I can learn lots more on this too, but if I’d gotten something a bit better I wouldn’t be looking to “upgrade” so soon I think…  any input on how well the MTP2 works with the upgraded Serato DJ would be great… like any chance the cue output is louder…LOL  Is there a mapping that works well with hotcues, looping, and some of the roll, slicer, slip mode, etc…. features that draw me to wanting the DDJ-SR  hoping for some more input…
