My 2 cents into this is, if you think with Traktor your laptop can’t handle it, why you think would it be any different with the Novation and Denon ? ALL those controller you mentioned, IS using a software same thing just like the Traktor,
My suggestion maybe to fix your laptop first, make sure it can handle ANY DJing software (the big 4 anyway) then you can go from there

Whoops, I guess I left that out; a shiny new macbook pro is in my future. That’s why I’m curious about what you think primarily about the novation and the denon.

    Denon DN MC2000, 3000, and 6000.
    Vetsax VCI-380 and 300.
    And the Novation Twitch.

These are some very different controllers.
The VCI 380 and 300 are a match made in heaven for Serato DJ but not for Traktor. There are very good mappings for both for VDJ, but I dislike the Traktor feel of both of them.
The Twitch is a fun controller, but if you are just starting out and you are learning the basics, I would recommend a controller with jogwheels to learn traditional beatmatching techniques.
The Denon units are built like a tank and have everything you need and work well with Traktor. However their layout is a bit cramped (which you have to like) and also their jogwheels are OKish but far below many other controllers.

Also I would not discard other DJ software so easily.
Serato DJ, VDJ, Traktor and nowadays Mixvibes Cross are all perfectly fine solutions and I would recommend making up your mind about software first and try around a bit. As I have seen to many DJ students fail on their software choice, just because someone told them that this software is the only way to go….

If you really cannot decide, maybe get a cheap controller first like a Numark Mixtrack Pro or Pro II, which have a good resale value. The Mixtrack works well with any software. It comes with Serato Intro which gives you a tiny glimps of what Serato DJ can do and it works with Traktor and Cross, which both have test versions freely available. This controller will get you into your first year easily and then you can decide where to upgrade to.

I second Terry’s post. Especially if you are just starting out start off with a mixtrack. It’ll work with pretty much any software and you can decide exactly what you need from there.

Why would your laptop crash? You didn’t mention the specs, but use your laptop only for djing with newly installed windows optimized for sound performance and make sure it doesn’t overheat and you should be fine.I’m djing professionally on 6 year old Dell laptop.I’ve only added ram,ssd and portable disk for music. And ssd as a bonus, not even necessary.
