MemberI can’t remember having those issues maybe because of the nature of performances I’ve been part of. People seem to be eager for new stuff, curiousity of what will come next. I would go with a polite response like: ” sorry maybe later …”
But I’m no good in ditching people. Playing the same song is boring as hell btw. Good luck with them people!September 16, 2013 at 1:03 pm #44236Dj Emazing
ParticipantAll the time!!!!! Especially if your booth is accessible, it it’s on a stage or in a room were they can’t access you then of course they aren’t going to request. They may get a large piece of paper/note pad or 3″x 3″ board and write there request with a black marker, thus creating a sign with their request on it to catch your attention if you not accessible. I personally don’t like taking request because it’s usually a song I will play or a song I already played.
We always get those people who say “it’s my birthday so play…..” “Can you play I know the birthday girl/boy……” “I want to take this girl home with me can you play…….” “I’m trying to get close to so and so can you play….” “do you have so and so cause no one is dancing……” (They ask this question when everyone is dancing.)

Participant“Play something we know” me. “like what?” guy. “I don’t know”
Yes sometime it has happened. I’ve even once or twice got a request to play the song I was playing.September 16, 2013 at 4:14 pm #44241Stazbumpa
ParticipantHappened to me Saturday just gone, a gaggle of girls walked into the club and requested a tune that finished 2 minutes previously. They were hot so I gave it a while and played it. This was early doors so it didn’t matter.
“Play something good” always crops up at gigs, as does the awkward silence they give me when I ask them what.

This is one thing I wouldn’t do, not matter how hot a female is I won’t ever do something such as play a request just because she’s hot. Reason being is that females like that have it too easy in life, not that it’s a bad thing. But you need to understand this is the Era of the Female Dj, the request of/for female djs is on a rise which can be a good/bad thing. It’s good thing for females who thought they couldn’t do it because they though that it was more of a guy thing, it’s a bad thing for us guy “because some females are just hot and don’t know how to dj”.
This can become even more troubling if “the female dj is hot and knows how to dj”. Would you hire yourself as a dj if had to choose between you djing that night or “The Hot Female dj” who probably can’t/can dj?September 16, 2013 at 6:33 pm #44248DJ Vintage
ModeratorA LOT! Back in Germany THE hit of the moment was Stevie Wonder’s “I just called to say I love you”. I swear, they wanted it at LEAST 3 times a night. One night when someone came up to me shortly after me playing it, I said it was broken. But you just played it!, he said. I took the 7″ vinyl from it’s cover, placed it halfway over the edge of my booth and hit it with my fist, breaking it clear in half. I held up the two halves and said “See? Broken!”. He didn’t look too friendly. Little did he know it was my second copy and I played it two hours later (some VERY cute girls requested it, hey, I am human!) so all was well.
But yeah, it’s ridiculous with over a zillion tracks to chose from to come up to the DJ and ask for exactly the same song again, unbelievable. And if you know it is someone who just walked in, I could (almost) relate to that. But it’s always the guys/gals you saw dancing to it 5 minutes before you played it.
Oh well, comes with the territory I guess. After all we are part of the hospitality business.
