ParticipantI know I’m gonna take heat from the more experienced members, but that’s one of the joys of ddjt forums 🙂 While it’s true that you really won’t be happy doing EDM sets in medium/large venues without a really good main/subwoofer combo, having >$2000 can be a tough nut to crack for a beginner. So, if you can go a little above your budget, I like the sound of the Behringer EUROLIVE B212D – decent bass for the price, but don’t expect miracles. Should be enough for small clubs and house parties though.

Well I do so smaller mobile gigs so it’s usually not more than 100 ppl or so plus I’m not going for rave level volumes.
Also I was curious about if I theoretically wanted to add a sub to my current setup and, how would I do it? I only have a set of rca inputs into the amp and then speaker wire outputs.

KeymasterI recommend a little reading before deciding anything:

I’ve read them already (twice). Great articles but I’m looking for specific model suggestions because I’ve heard that there’s a lot of cheap Chinese generic speakers that suck and I have a buddy that says he’ll help me find a good deal but he needs the specific model to check because he doesn’t know anything about PA systems.

ModeratorThere is a good LD Systems review on the blog, Phil seems to like them for the kind of gig you are describing. It’ll be a step down down from a Carver 1200 though! Excellent amps.

Greetinx,
C.Yeah its a great amp but it’s +25 years old and i think the fan may not be 100% so i’m afraid of it over heating. the little rubber feet at the bottom started melting and the receiver(?) the accompanies it failed recently. The LD System looked good but i’m not sure the power output would be sufficient if i do a larger function. But thats probably me being paranoid. the Behringer speakers mentioned earlier looked good though.

KeymasterBut the LD already scratches your maximum budget… anything with more power (aka reloop 1000 system) will be at least 1000 bucks… so if you want more bang you need more cash…
I would not recommend the mentioned Behringer system, to me it sounds awful…September 9, 2013 at 6:23 am #43929Steve (k-rex) Richman
ParticipantYeah, I know Behringer is regarded as not pro quality – but was at a friend’s backyard party where 2 of these were the sound source and all agreed it worked pretty damn well. And it’s not just me – if you look at reviews on amazon, guitar center, sweetwater, etc. they’re overwhelmingly positive. But speaker choices are pretty personal – I don’t want to be known as “that a** that recommended these sh* speakers”, so if at all possible please listen first at a local music store.
And to quote my original post – I know I’m gonna take heat from the more experienced members, but that’s one of the joys of ddjt forums 🙂

KeymasterHonestly I do not care about any user reviews anywhere since my gf is a psychologist and explained the following is happening (especially with musicians):
They buy something that is still quite expensive (500 bucks have to be earned…) and then have it. Now if it is obviously total bull* but they still envy the thing they did not get, they start writing how good it is anyways and anyone spending more is an idiot.
This hype then goes to the next people, because the one who said it is why I bought it so it cannot be that bad right? The worst in this case are guitarists 😉 but PA is close to the top there. I have been doing this for quite some time and it is a plain fact, that you get what you pay for and there are no miracles.
Of course if you do a house party and all the guests expect is overly loud crappy music and in 60min or less they are too drunk to notice anyways… then yes it will be a good party as it will be the booze they fondly remember so the music had to be good right? If this is all you do, then by all means go for it.
However if you do other things?
Say for example a wedding. Most DJs not even prepare well for weddings and this is bad, really bad. A wedding is supposed to be the best day in the life of that couple (well until the divorce anyways) and offending their ears with bad PA? I would rather not do it.September 10, 2013 at 6:19 am #43963DJ Vintage
ModeratorGet something like LD if you don’t want the hassle and recurring cost of renting something for small gigs. Anything bigger, just charge your customer for gear, go out and rent. You can get the exact setup for the size of the gig, get true professional gear (not “sounds almost as good as …”) and don’t have to worry about storage, depreciation or getting new gear every couple of years.
My motto: “Own top quality gear that you really need and use regularly, rent top quality for all other occassions”.
