    Greetings, Erik – not really sure what the nature of your question is. If it’s about ssd reliability, no need to worry. Current SSD tech is extremely reliable, and indeed is used by enterprise storage vendors (such as EMC) as front end storage.Also much better performance, so actually it’s the best place for your library. If it’s about multiple copies of your library, by all means yes. My library lives on ssd, MacBook Pro – but also on time capsule, as well as 2 different external HD – can’t be too careful 🙂

    My Macs simply backup to a time capsule at home… I feel quite safe with that.

    Sorry- Not a question about reliability of the drive but of space. Itunes library is big enough that it would probably fill 1/3-1/2 of my MBAs drive, so I’ve so far kept it on a different computer and used spotify to play music on my laptop. Now I’m moving and not taking the big computer with me.

    Since I still use spotify to listen to music, I have a system where i keep my itunes library on an external HD (backs up with google music as well) and a separate itunes library on the internal SSD. I have to tell itunes when i want to switch libraries by holding option while i open it. I was wondering if other people do something like this with limited space or if there is some better way out there. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and put my whole library on the Air?

    The only way to handle multiple iTunes databases is with the Option option you mentioned. I think there is a blog article on how to properly do that (recent).

    For several reasons I keep my library on an external HD of which I keep a synchronized copy. That way it doesn’t matter if I make changes on the road (with external drive 1 hooked to my MBP) or behind my 6-core PC (with external drive 2 hooked up) they are always in sync.

    Unless 500GB SSD’s go down in price and down a lot, I am sticking to the whirly birds for now (have an SSD in my MBP and PC for system disk though).

    To clarify, does that mean you keep your library ONLY on the external or you sync your external to an internal library? If so, do you just accept having to plug in/remove your external endlessly? This is my main issue as I carry my laptop around for other reasons. And you just let there be tons of songs that you would never actually play/let playlists do your organizing?

    I have some stuff I listen to privately. I keep that in my local iTunes library, synced with my iPad and iPhone.

    I got so fed up with iTunes for my DJ stuff, that I stopped using it for that altogether recently. Until then I had it on my external disk. Just a small, no external power, 2,5″ thingie. And yep, I’d plug it in if I was somewhere for a longer period of time and wanted something other than my “limited” 30GB personal collection. The HD fit easily into my laptop bag. Just don’t leave a USB port connected when you put away your laptop. USB has a tendency to break off (both on the laptop as on the HD side, I speak from experience).
