Basically I am inspired by what I see people like Richie Hawtin or Dubfire doing (although from some of the clips I’ve watched they do still play full length tracks).

Just curious if anyone else has attempted such a thing yet.

Tried yes, with Ableton. It is just too much work for me. I may be lazy, but in my book the effort is not worth it, unless you play a festival where everyone is watching you. And even there it is doubtful if a few thrown in Maschine pad performances would not have the same effect.

I have tried with Ableton too in the past and also found that a lot of effort. Traktor I find much quicker as its beat detection is better so 99% of the time I don’t have to correct where it says the beats are.

I think the reason I want to do it is that it will in theory give me full control over the sound of the mix. I imagine having an arsenal of loops – beats / melodies / fx / percussion – which are all organised in key and also by intensity.

By using 4 track decks with loops on all of them I think I could achieve this. I’m going to give it a go and see how far I get!

I fancied the Idea of full-loop mixing as well, but stayed away from it – its too much work. The amount of preparation is ridiculous (i think) till you have a reasonable large library of loops to assemble a whole set with it.

I stay with 3 Decks + Maschine, i rather play the songs out and add a little percussive elements, thats enough for me.

I didn’t read it in your post – have you considered a F1/remix decks? It would be perfect for your approach!

But keep us posted, i’m interested in your progress 🙂

I have considered the F1 – and it would be great. They’re too expensive though for what is supposed to be a hobby!

I actually think the odds might be stacked against me. Even people like Hawtin & Dubfire don’t play with all loops – they seem to mostly A-B mix with loops / maschine / FX on top.

So if they can’t do it with all the time and money they have – what chance do I stand 🙂

If you have an iPad you can grab this alongside TouchOSC!

Yeah, i heard that, too. What you can do is to build several minisets (or remix sets) of loops you know that go well with each other. And then mix it like a whole tune, like “normal track” out into “loop track” into “normal track”.

I think this would be a reasonable approach to your problem 🙂

Messing around with only samples and loops is my favourite type of work I just love it
it gives you so many ideas to blend different musical genres. Give it a try, be bold, experiment with sounds and samples, I can assure you it is not a bad idea, also the effort sometimes you put can be very rewarding.
