Well all I did was ask the shopkeeper nicely to demonstrate the products I would like to hear. Funny enough they always did it.

Well everytime I go in there theres like no one in pro audio, do you think I could ask someone else in the store?

Indeed. Just ask someone and be nice. If they cannot help you themselves they usually know someone that can.
If they do not, then the shop is bad to begin with.

I would also recommend smaller shops, beause they will most likely help you with everything. I would say: go on YouTube, or just google, do some research on certain monitors in certain price range (compare relevant ones) and then ask shop assistant to help you comparing them. If they won’t have certain monitors they will deliver them so you will be able to try them all. Make sure that you look more then just interested in listening but also in buying.

Talking about quality: use your iPod with some good quality wavs and thats it. ( if you are searching for monitor for few 1000€ then just ask them to plug media player + amp if needed and you just bring cds. ALSO MAKE SURE THAT CABLES ARE AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE AND AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE!

I am partial to bringing my favorite CD (or favorite mix which burnt to CD). If they are a pro audio store they WILL have a mixer and CD-player to hook up and play a CD.

I don’t like hooking up iPod’s through 3.5mm cables for testing purposes. But maybe I am just being picky.

Guitar Centers usually have a way for you to plug in your own iPod, iPhone or MP3 device into a mixer to test out monitors, PA speakers, etc. In most cases, the people in the Pro Audio section will plug in their own smart phone in case you do not have your own device.

Don’t feel badly asking them to help you. However, I would ask them to explain and show you what the eq settings are on the back of the monitors (or PA speakers) so you can get a better idea when A & B’ing the products.

So good news, there is a critical listening class tonight at Guitar Center and I’m hoping I’ll get to listen to some of the ones in my budget

Cool! Yeah, I saw that email from Guitar Center about how to pick out monitors or something. I should’ve went yesterday and quizzed the instructor about why I experienced heating issues with the Mackie MR8’s and if I would experience the same if I went with the Yahama HS8’s.

Yeah, that’s why it was cool, all of the questions I had were answered and I learned about some things I didn’t even think of
