Hey, so heres my point of view (Im 15 and been mixing for only 6 months). Personally, the s2 is a great controller to start on. I mixed with the mixtrack pro for a month before i got my first controller, and they were shit. Givin that they didnt have a headphone jack it made mixing a lot harder. But the mixtrack pro 2 does. I think you should go with the s2 to start. Its a great controller, with cue points, effects, loop selection etc. The s4 is deffinetly a great upgrade, but for starting purposes i think you should go with the s2, great price, and almost the same as the s4. You wont be using 4 decks when starting either. You will probably want to upgrade at some point in your mixing career but for now the s2 is great. Mixtrack is a no, ive never used a mixtrack pro 2, but i used the first one and i can tell you it feels very cheap and cheasy. I dont know if that rant made any sense, but my insight is, screw the mixtrack, get the S2. If you really want get the S4, but its a bit much to buy if your starting out. Traktor Pro 2 is also a very good program to use. Very simple and clear on where everything is

Well something to keep in mind (and the only reason I am considering the S4) is that NI dropped the price on the S4 “while supplies last”. So retail its like 50 buck difference according to NI’s website. So why not just go for the S4. But again depends on the deal I find used.

The Traktor license can easily be transferred to another person via their website. There is a how to in the topic on their website also.
Now the S4 is a decent Traktor controller and the current price is quite OK.

Used is another matter, as the NI gear is most part plastic I am not so trusty on re-sale units.

well, yes i see your point now, the s2 goes for 500 and the s4 is going for 600 right now new, correct? because if so, you mine as well buy the new s4 over the new s2. but if its a matter of 200+ dollar difference between the s2 and s4, you should go with the s2. Its really your choice on how much money you would like to spend. I figured im only 15 and my parents wouldnt wanna buy a 1000 dollar controller for me since im just starting. So i asked for the s2 for christmas and have been glued to it since

Ya the S2 would be plenty for me. And Terry I definitely agree. Plastic is always a shady product used, but I dont know, maybe I just sit on it for a couple more weeks and save and buy new. Or just go the mixtrack pro II. I am just starting and even if it is mostly plastic, it is a good starter controller even if they just took the first one and threw some sample pads on it.

Hmm time for some budgeting and sitting at a guitar center checking out controllers haha.

Well there is good plastic 🙂
If you are just starting, the Mixtrack Pro is excellent and it will give you freedom to try out other DJ software.

S4 has a lot of bells and whistles that i only sometimes wish i had. keep in mind its size vs the S2. the S2’s relative compactness is what steered me towards it and putting the extra green towards other stuff. of course the S4 was 950 back then…

@DJ AMK – I know I wouldnt even consider the S4 for that reason if the price hadnt dropped.

But I just heard about the Behringer CMD Studio 4A.
I dont like that it has Deckadance, mostly cause of the flaws that Phil pointed out. Im interested in finding a review with the traktor mapping. Or if they fix the flaws the controller has with Deckadance I will really consider it. especially with the price point. I think it looks a lot more professional than the Mixtrack pro.

The lack of Gain knob doesn’t bug me too much, especially since the Mixtrack doesnt have seperate gains for the two decks anyways.

    So many choices ha.

In my book the mixtrack pro or especially the Denon MC2000 blow the CMD out of the water.

The MC2000 is more expensive than the Mixtrack and the CMD, but it is a direct possibility. Well I get paid on the 12 and ironically its also my birthday. I may have to get my self something nice.

I took the plunge and bought an S2 off ebay (dun dun dunnnn) for just under 300. It came in the mail yesterday, perfect condition. everything works, knobs, LEDs, faders. So I made out like a bandit and now will proceed to learn what the heck I am doing! But I am in no rush, I think it would be fun to DJ parties, and weddings but Im no way interested in being a club dj at this time. Maybe down the line Ill change my mind. We’ll see. Im excited though 🙂
