ParticipantSounds exciting…I would recommend you check out Six Degrees Records they offer a lot of top modern, international artists. Their compilation full lengths are a nice jumping on point. Also, I would suggest the Rough Guide series from World Music Network – I recently picked up a couple of the Brazilian compilations – completely baffled my friends from Brazil 😉 And lastly, try Real World Records – I was fond of the Michael Brooks collaborations.
Good luck!

ModeratorHey Syd,
My tip: send an email to the secretaries of the various corporate offices and ask them to give you a top 10-20 of favorite stuff in their country (up to you to limit it to certain genres of course).
No need to become proficient in international music in a hurry for one gig (unless you really enjoy the experience and don’t mind to spend the time needed).

ParticipantWhatever reggae you play, try not to make it all sean paul & bob marley tracks haha. Reggae Hits has at least 30 volumes of popular tracks from as far back as the 80’s cherry pick a few tracks from that.

Greetinx,
C.Chuck, I don’t have the inside track to send an email to the secretaries. I have no affiliation with the company other than being hired for there event.
I don’t plan to become proficient in International music. I just want to be able to play a song or two from the different regions. I was told that they would have folk of the following: African American, Hispanic, a few Vietnamese, Cambodian, and eastern Europeans
What to do?

ParticipantI would go with JDLX’s suggestions if you want to be more specific, but for the most part most people will dance to the Top 40, Michael Jackson, Pop, etc. I witnessed a corporate function where the DJ was simply playing music from LMFAO, Black Eyed Peas, etc. and the ethnic make up varied. People were dancing all over the place. The DJ didn’t do any fancy mixing either. Hec, I don’t think he mixed at all…lol. You should do fine if you have Top 40, MJ, Pop, and don’t forget your line dancing songs, Wobble (everybody wobbles these days), Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, etc.
Good luck and congrats for landing the gig. Be sure you have your business cards on deck.

Well, what I did was put Google to work and searched for artists and compilations for these genres and created some playlists in my Spotify account. I use plug my Samsung GalaxyTablet into my Traktor S4 and use one of my 4 decks. This way I will be able to play the songs directly from Spotify and just mix them in. This is a corporate event so I dont have to make the place jump. Just a few different songs here and there and I should be good.
