ParticipantSuperb find D-Jam, used to prefer Muzik to Mixmag, although DJ Mag used to the be the place or a proper hype chart for me. Can I also point to the Muzik Mag Bedroom Bedlam DJ competition each month, just have a look how many names have gone on to have careers from winning that competition. James Zabiela for one, I’m lucky to have a CDR of the winning mix, amazing what could be done back then with no where near the DJ tools available now.

ModeratorAnybody know if any copies of the revered Dutch “Discoh” magazine survived?
It was popular in the early-mid 80s and they were among the very first to feature a harmonic key!

I agree. I used to like picking up issues of Mixmag, but felt at the time the magazine seemingly became more about drugs and less about music/DJ culture.
DJ Mag I’m off and on about. Sometimes it felt like a magazine more meant for mobile DJs. Not a bad thing, but not my thing.
Discoh I have no clue about.

If you are not Dutch I wouldn’t expect you to have a clue. It was a highly specialized if flimsy and (in retrospect) simple magazine. But great dance charts (with BPM of course), some good tips and tricks and like I said, really REALLY early adopters of musical key notation with the charts.
They also organised a Discoh Fair and for that event came out with a mix album. One of them (not sure about the others) mixed by no other than later famous Ben Liebrand. These are mixes from the days of Revox Reel Tape recorders and cut and splice techniques … we HAVE come a long way.

ParticipantIn Chicago, there used to be a local magazine called Thousand Words. I remember them as just plain underground. They mainly covered small spots like Smartbar or local raves. Kind of a polar opposite to TimeOut or other glammy poppy mainstream nightlife pubs.
This one isn’t local, but I also remember a magazine called Streetsound. They were famous for this one big timeline they made of the history of electronic dance music. They started with 1980 and went to the late 90s, and kept adding in new genres as they were invented. Would love to find that again.

ParticipantYeah…I’m thinking of copying/pasting his content into a tiki toki timeline…although I always felt that timeline missed so much.

ParticipantHi D-Jam, going fairly off-topic here but i’ve been re-reading ‘Last night a DJ saved my life’ last few weeks (even better when re-reading imo!) and just wondering as you’re a Chicago-ite, (or based there now anyway?) are there any remnants of the old clubs there now, particularly the Warehouse and the Music Box, stomping grounds of Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy, birthplaces of house and Acid House according to many? Are they still clubs? Or does anyone even know where they were? Just wondering anyway, let me know if you get a minute, would be very grateful, many thanx, Beedle
