Get a good book on music theory, especially how harmonics and scales work.
Even though the title is cheesy the book “How to write a Pop Song” is actually quite helpful for song structuring, scale usage etc. But you already have to know your music theory to put it to full use.

There is a book called Tonal harmony by Stefan Kostka , it is fantastic for taking you through every element in music theory. The book does assume you have some prior musical knowledge though, such as how to read music, basic rhythm, and major and minor scales. The book explains everything very clearly and comes with an audio cd for the examples in the book:)
