ParticipantDon’t mix out during the verse and work on your scratching. I just saw an international hip hop Dj the other day do a set that had 0 mixing, all his transitions were quick cuts or scratches into the next track…
Find what works for you that keeps the rhythm going without drastic jumps in volume. When I play hip hop I like to mix the hook of the outgoing track with an instrumental intro or loop from the track that’s up next.

Participanttrack selection (as ever) is imperative. think about the lyrics or mood of a song to help you decide what to play next. bpm doesn’t matter so much as long you drop the next tune at the right moment.
cut to the next tune directly after a chorus (before the next verse starts). a simple baby scratch on the first kick works well in this instance.
another cool transition could be to loop the (typically 8-bar) break after the second chorus and mix in to the (looped) intro of the next track, cutting across with the x-fader. you could even cut the bass of the new track and let the vocals play over the looped break.
catch and scratch vocals with no beat underneath.
if playing a classic that everyone knows the words to and is singing along, stop the music on the last bar of the phrase, let the crowd sing and then drop your next beat.*
get into the flow, move your body and you should instinctively know what to do.*this last one can be risky so use your judgement carefully as you are relying on the crowd to fill the silence. make sure its a banger (speaking from experience)!

KeymasterGo to youtube and search for “DJ Iceman” he has several blend tutorials that are really good. It is simple hip hop blends without scratching.
If you want to learn how to scratch I would recommend taking our scratch course…
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/dj-courses/#academy/join-list/It is exclusively made for controller scratching and the NS6 is awesome to scratch on.

ParticipantIf you’re using DVS then get jiggy with loops. They’re incredibly helpful.

ParticipantDj Connibis,
How did the gig go? It would be nice for you to enlighten others who may be trying the same thing out

ParticipantI apologize for taking so long ! Just have been caught up, however I do have some positive feedback. I watched some of the Iceman tutorials and took some insight from that while making sure I knew the tracks i wanted to play fairly well so that it wasnt a hassle live to time when to send the next track in with only its Bass and cut the current tracks Bass out , often during a vocal segment without the kick… As far as scratching, it remains my current goal to conquer.

Biz Markee was here about a month ago and played a NY style mix (30-40sec of a song, then cut to the next one) and the crowd was into it for the whole set. Last weekend Afrika Islaam (understudy to Afrika Bambata of the Zulu nation) performed a similar set. Biz spiced it up with some beat boxing as well, but both definitely rested on their name recognition as opposed to their djing skill.
