It’s kind of a hard question to answer, but i’ll try. First, with either software you choose, you will probably add sounds to it anyway, so judging by the stock selection is kind of a moot point. Also, how do you see yourself using the software? Are you hoping to perform live with it, or will it remain strictly in the studio? Another point is using the software with the mouse and keyboard. Whether you perform live with it, or keep it strictly for production, you will probably want to add a tactile interface to it eventually. Working with either one of those programs with a mouse & keyboard alone is kinda like owning a Ferarri with a Civic engine in it (sorry about the crappy metaphor). The point being, it looks nice, but you can’t unleash its full potential without the hardware to really make it go.

Okay, I think I might want to use it live one day so I will go for ableton. But I am thinking about just buying 8, is it still a really good software even with 9 out?

Is the iPhone 4S still a good phone even though the iPhone 5 is out? Yes.

MAjor artists have rocked the biggest clubs with Ableton 8, so yes, its still good software
