Don’t lose focus and let the crowd get to your head, be confident in everything you do and rock the place. Mistakes are bound to happen to anyone at ANY level so don’t dwell on them, otherwise best of luck!

don’t have any more than 2 drinks before you start.
if nerves kick in, heads down for the first few mixes to stay focused as you settle.
playing on a big soundsystem is a completely different experience to just turning your speakers up loud.
relax and have fun with it, you know what you’re doing.
    good luck

truth is, you should hear your mistakes before the rest, this thought process makes you pay attention more than the rest. remember, unless you really train wreck, you will be fine. keep it out the red, deep breath and fake it till you make it. they are not there to for you but just the music. they didnt come to see dj such and such, just to have a good time. so, have a good time too. remember the basics, always know where the 1 is and never cut a verse, little effects for transitions and you will be golden. REMEMBER, THE ONLY THING THAT SEPARATES YOU FROM THE NEXT GUY IS YOUR LIBARY. BAR NONE. know when to drop the right tracks at the right time is a learning process that takes sometimes years to master. good luck green pea

    Hey man, good for you!

Be sure to enjoy and try to NOTICE the night as it progresses. That way you can remember it and trust me, you will want to remember your first time … just like sex!

Thanks for all the advice guys. People came up to me afterwards and told me I played a great set. But a combination of poor turnout to the party and me having to compete with 5 LOUD karaoke rooms and music coming from the bar in the downstairs part of the restaurant kind of had me playing to 4 or 5 people for most of the gig. The peak was when I played “Gangnam Style” (Don’t judge me it was a request) and like 40 people started doing it. I actually played it again on accident and everyone just danced to it all over again. Then I played Rattle by Bingo Players and people liked that. And then it just kind of drooped because the karaoke rooms got even louder and people went into them. But yea it was still fun I played a good set, people danced, I got paid, I enjoyed it. Thanks again for all the help.

Congrats on the first gig 🙂 Glad you rocked it, and sounds like it was a pretty difficult situation so kudos for not letting it get to you. What sort of music were you playing out of interest?
And no shame in playing music the crowd want to hear – that’s pretty much the aim of the game.
Your Gangnam experience reminds me of being in a tiny club in Hanoi a few months ago when Gangnam Style came on, and a group of Korean girls went mad for it and started dancing on tables. The DJ then loaded it up on the other deck and created a nicely done extended version on the fly – smart move I thought 🙂

They wanted house music, which is like my specialty, they told me to play Tiesto, Hardwell, Calvin Harris, SHM, etc. and also some like Top 40 songs. So I found cool remixes of top 40 songs. I worked in the well known songs with other songs which I liked that were lesser known or by lesser known artists, because it’s hard to fill a 4 hour set with just well known stuff. And I threw some trap in because they asked for a little hip hop touch too.

Well the guys that hired me said they would definitely bring me back again and they said they would tell other student organizations about me so I will probably be getting more calls in the future. 🙂
