The answer is not easy… the thing is: The best way is for you to find your things easily.

Like I have very weird playlists and other DJs that tried to use my library pulled their hair out and almost jumped out of the booth…. but it works for me…

It’s a personal thing you’ll have to figure out.

I use Traktor. I have all my songs separated to quickslot playlists numbered 1-12 which I put songs into based on their key. I then just jump around those to pick or just click on on track collection to see everything which I sort by BPM. That’s the system and workflow I’ve gotten use to so it works for me.

It’s definitely not easy. First thing i did was to decide that my dj library would be different to my “standard” library. so in my dj collection there are no albums. only tracks/singles. then i separated the songs according to genre. and in each genre three subfolders for “low”, “medium” and “high”, which in my case has to do not with the bpms or the key but the energy of the song and how much i like it (which assumes that i like high energy “party” songs). On top of that i also use playlists but only as a guide to where i want things to go. some playlists stay on one genre. others change every 5-10 songs. most playlists are made taking bpms and keys into consideration.

A lot of people do things differently. most i assume use itunes. but my goal was to put things where i can find them and also have suggestions of other similar tracks without changing too many folders.

Thanks guys, the last two responses are kind of the way I was leaning.
I think I’ll keep the key folders, put all of the ripped tracks into the key folders (that’ll be a fun job…) and use smart crates and playlists from there. I also saw a post from Phil recommending using the stars for energy levels (similar to your case set up Red Eye). Seems like that’ll be the way I’ll go.
Thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated. If anyone else has got any tips on file structure/management, I’d still love to hear ’em.
