To clarify my question, is Sydney open to digital DJ’ing? Will I get laughed at if I bring my laptop and controllers to the clubs or is it more about playing good music full stop?

Hey man, I’m a novice digital DJ nowhere near ready to play to a crowd but I’m from Sydney (Northern Beaches) and I’d also like to know if I’m gonna get laughed at when I break out my Kontrol S2 from my backpack.

What’s the overall opinion from Sydney DJ/Promoters/Club Bosses about the digital DJ wave?

From a Melbourne perspective, which I can’t imagine is too different, go out to clubs you like, make friends, talk to promoters and other DJs….. Check out the forums on inthemix.com.au (way more people over there, and it’s localised, lots of local DJs, promoters etc.)

Regarding controllers, it depends, if it’s a bigger club and it has a set of 2000s and a 900, then no they probably won’t be too cool on controllers, I’ve seen quite a few around though, it’s not a laughed out sort of thing, just make sure you can play on the CDJs if you need to.

I’ve seen controllers and laptops at concerts (opening DJ acts for performers and such). In clubs, I’ve mainly seen CDJ’s or Serato DVS being used, not full on controllers.

But i don’t go clubbing that much these days 😉

I have no reservations with using the club’s CDJ’s but i’d like the option to use my controller if i want.

If anyone’s seen a controller used in a club in Oz, let me know!
