ParticipantHello all,
I have a question regarding my job at the cinema and djing.
I have bought myself a Numark Mixtrack Pro DJ Controller last weekend.
I have been busy training on beatmatching and mixing some random songs into each other.Yesterday i got an email from my boss that they needed a DJ for a special evening with a special movie (the dutch folks here may know it ‘verlieft op ibiza’).
As I said before i just got a controller with headphones and I training little but often (as phil said in his training videos). That brings me to my question.
What must u say to my boss ?
I would really like doing it, but the chances of making a mess are big.And if you guys say just do it.
What kind if tips and tricks could you give me?I hope can help me.

ParticipantFirst, those that don’t take risk never profit,e.i. go for it if you think you can do it even if there’s a risk, but be sure you’re comfortable with the level of risk. Two,keep it simple,if it’s your first gig, don’t do massive tricks and a lot of EQing, just keep it simple maybe throw in a trick every now and then. Not often mind you, infact if you’re just beggining you can get away with out them.

ParticipantThank you Black Rag, for the words of encouragement.
I think every experience is a good one even if things are not going as planned.
I just called my boss to tell hem I will do it.
He told me that the idea behind it was to give the guests a little show.
I asked what kind of music to play and he said that it would just be music that fits with the movie. So thanks again.
if anyone else has some other tips I would be glad to hear them!January 29, 2013 at 1:15 pm #35915Bojan Ljukovcanin
ParticipantOne more tip if you really wanna learn some tricks to use,go youtube and watch every single DJ tutorial that contains a trick to put into your set.Believe it or not that’s how i first learned everything i know about DJing.

KeymasterYou have to feel comfy enough to do it.
But generally if you finished our fast course and have the basic transitions down, then by all means go for it.
Take care that the soundsystem is OK for you and that you have the cables to connect to it.
Keep calm and stick to the transitions you can perform.
Do not overuse effects or loops.
Have a drink but do not be drunk.
Know what music is used in the movie and plan a set accordingly.
Have at least 2 times the music ready for the time your are supposed to play.
Think about the tracks you are going to play and make a playlist/crate for it.
Prepare your hotcues.
Keep calm.
If you make a mistake, do not panic and keep playing music. Just do like nothing happened 😉
HAVE FUN!January 29, 2013 at 2:12 pm #35924Jeroen Kolkman
ParticipantI will deffinitly have fun 🙂
Comming week I will be practicing hard and getting the songs together for the set.
Thank you for the tips.ps. the boss is going to come back to me to see if we can find some setup for the speakers.

Memberrecord everything you are doing now, listen to it,over and over, and use the prerecorded sets and add “lightly” an over sample or effect live. No need to think you are armin van buuren and ppl came to see you put a show on. You are the window dressing, so enjoy it and make the best of it.

ParticipantI asked what kind of music to play and he said that it would just be music that fits with the movie.
My only additional advice (to the great tips already mentioned by others) would be to clarify what he means by that. Movies are WIDE open to interpretation, and this could be a huge opportunity or pitfall for your set. A Kung-Fu action movie could either have club bangers or traditional Chinese music. Either interpretation is “correct” but that doesn’t mean the crowd (or more importantly, your boss) sees it the same way.

ParticipantDo it! Wats the worst thing that can happen if you mess up? Maybe your boss being a bit angry/disappointed at you. At the end of the day tho you work for the cinema, dont take it as a trial for a djing job because it’s not.
On the plus side, if you do well, and if you follow all the tips above you should, you will have done a favor to your boss, you will have gained some LIVE experience and confidense respect from your friends and maybe a few new friends.
One more tip, someone mentioned record your practise set. definitely do that, and bring it with you and something else you like on an mp3 player if you can as backup. unknown problems might turn up suddenly on “maiden journeys”. You also have less stress to deal with a problem if you know there is a plan b.
Make sure you have fun!!
