    Hi TTR and welcome!

I’m brand new here myself and also new at DJ’ing. It’s difficult when slapping genre labels on artists because unless it’s blatantly clear, it can be a matter of opinion. I listen to a few tracks by Chasing Kurt (have never heard of them before) and the first thing that jumped into my mind was the “House” genre. When I want to dive into a certain genre and collect similar music, I utilize internet radio quite a lot. Pandora is my fav, but Slacker radio has a great house genre (I think they understand House better than Pandora does). I also use iTunes and Beatport to purchase my music. iTunes genius will help recommend artists similar to what you are listening to and also tell you what other people have bought. And Beatport has everything separated by genre on their site, so you can go to their house section and just listen to the top songs which will get you started. Then it’s just a matter of finding tracks you like/ want to play/ will work great on the dance floor. The hunt for new music has always been one of my favorite things to do! Well I hope I was able to give you some pointers.. while not an expert by any means, I hope I was able to help you out! Cheers mate!

    Hi DJM,
Thank you for your response, which helps alot.
I’ll take a look at beatport and also itunes-slacker.
CK are under a new label now and so will check out the other producers on that label too.
    Cheers,

If you have a boring office day job (like me) I will listen to internet radio all day and write down tracks I like. When I get home I buy all the music that I wrote down. You’ll be surprised how many good tunes you can find this way!

    Sounds like a plan?
What kit are you using? I’m just using virtual dj at the moment as I only decided to take a look on Sunday.

I started off with the free version of Virtual DJ two years ago which is how I learned at first. I moved over to CD’s because my first club gig only had CD decks and I didn’t have a laptop. This was great because I was able to teach myself how to manually beat match which has come in handy a few times while using software.

I now am using the Traktor S4 controller with Traktor Pro software and a MacBook Pro as my laptop. It took me quite a while to save up for all of that, but it was worth it! This article might help you choose the controller that will best fit your style: http://www.digitaldjtips.com/dj-controllers-guide-2013/

Thanks. I’ve been looking at the Traktor S4. Do alot of clubs still use CDJ2000’s and if so, how did you find the transition from Traktor to the Pioneers? There are a million questions in my head but Phil’s course is helping alot.

I know exactly what you’re going through!! I’m still learning everyday about every aspect of DJ’ing! In fact the CD Decks I used were just basic Numark CD Decks (not even CDJ’s but just basic decks.. and pretty crappy old one’s at that!). So needless to say I was forced to get pretty creative with my sets. I used the EQ knobs a lot to drop the bass or highs and create dramatic effects with the limited tools I had. The transition was not easy to be honest, but I will always appreciate the skills I learned on those decks. Of course the venue I was DJ’ing at, at the time, was a very small Mexican restaurant/ cantina turned “night club” so we had pretty limited equipment. I’m not sure what the standard CDJ is amongst the bigger venue though. I’m still fighting to get as many gigs as I can where I can and most are in small venues/ bars.

In Europe in the bigger clubs, I think that standard equipment is Piorneer CDJ2000’s unless someone here says otherwise although I imagine DDJ’s if there is such a thing.

My reason is to make my own mixes and then play private parties for fun. Would be good experience to play in a club but not my motive.

Just listened to the top 10 deep house tracks on beatport and none have vocals such as CK. Do vocals simply depend on the producer or is that a different genre (excuse the lack of knowledge)?

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Chasing Kurt is a german “deep house” project. I would suggest you dig into iTunes and search for deep house, you should get a fair response of titles that are similar in vocal construction. However there is some deep house that is constructed differently, so let some fail digs not disappoint you and keep digging.

Hey Trancetorock, here is the beatport page for Chasing Kurt’s label, you might want to dig through there as well.
