Home 2023 Forums The DJ Booth A fan sent me an e-mail asking why do some DJs still use vinyl. Here's a copy of it.

Still plenty of dance music released on vinyl, well in advance of digital copies sometimes. Vinyl sales are up again last year, certainly in the UK.

I’m now mainly a digital DJ but have a vast vinyl collection and still very much use and appreciate it. It’s not just old schoolers, it’s a format, to be used, just like a CD or digital audio file.

Its an old format but that does not make it an obsolete format.

You can still do all that you need to do to adequately please a crowd with vinyl. So people keep using it. They don’t need to go digital to keep up with other DJs. They may choose to, but they don’t need to.

For those who enjoy carrying milk crates, more power to them.

I have to admit I also found a few DJs that:
Are afraid of DJing digital because of the possibilities and that they might get compared to controllerists and their tricks, which simply they cannot pull off. So they stay with turntables, because at the moment if you can mix and beatmatch with them you are “still cool”, even if you cannot pull off a single turntablism trick.

I’d still be using vinyl if I could get all my music on vinyl and it didn’t cost so much to ship to the middle of nowhere.

İ use both because much of my vinyl is and probably never will be available digitally, i mix it up with both if i feel like it, and yes vinyl sales are up big-time. Vinyl is a way of life a sub-culture so it aint gonna go away that easily if at all. Forget the format and focus on the message.

There are turntables that cost about a hundred bucks that you can turn records into mp3s.

Meh…play any way you like. I like midi now, others like vinyl. I think it’s cool we have choices.

Agreed! I started out on vinyl in the early 90’s because that’s the only option. Went all digital 10yrs later. But, it is wonderful to have options, and vinyl is hardly obsolete.
