ParticipantI’ve seen parties where the DJ never spoke to the crowd, but he had a buddy on board speaking to the crowd. This is a an interesting topic because I’ve seen it mixed both ways and the parties were still good.

ParticipantThats what I’ve been thinking about doing I have some actual club events starting to come up so I want to try and figure out how to approach them before they come.

Keymaster99% of the time in bars, clubs and lounges I do never speak anything.
On the other hand on parties or especially weddings you need also to entertain and get things going and so speaking is sometimes essential, although at some parties no words are needed.
So totally depends, but you soon get the hang of it.January 9, 2013 at 12:59 pm #34725Sunjalo
Memberin my experience only in top 40 ‘commercial’ clubs and wedding/birthday events have i ever seen or heard the dj speak… in the ‘underground’ scene/dance clubs i have never seen it happen, the dj’s let the tunes to the talking 😛

the same here…. i never speak.. BUT just one time i go to a “top 40” party and they have someone who speak; to be honest is pretty confort and kind of let you do your thing more relaxed

ParticipantMy experience is that most DJ’s never speak. That being said, if you DJ for a club or bar, the owner/manager may ask you to make announcements, or shout out the drink special a few times, whatever.
There’s no real “need” for a DJ to speak, unless you want that to be part of your show such as hyping the crowd, etc.

ParticipantHa ha! The only club I know 99% of the time DJ’s talk to the crowd is at gentlemen’s clubs…LOL. They usually give you the intro and what it takes to get the dancers loose.

ParticipantI hate it, and in cases I did I was sort of drunk and the words didn’t come out as I wanted (being native Dutch speaker trying to drop some dope lines in English was harder than I thought).
If you really want to, better find an MC who wants to do the talking for you. Or prepare one of your friends to MC for you (which is sometimes appreciated if you’re into dnb or dubstep). Or just forget about it.January 15, 2013 at 5:51 am #35069christophe thiago
MemberA lot of times I always found the DJ speaking to be irritating and some times they start to speak when a good track is playing, which totally ruins the vibe. Nonetheless I have seen DJ’s that hype the crowd up by doing so.

ParticipantI’ve only seen one house DJ to this date ever speak to the crowd and he’s actually really good with it, MC Flipside. That guy can spin a party like a king.

ParticipantYou could also hire an MC, such as this fellow:

ParticipantExcept for this guy – works my dancefloor all the time!

It’s common for Reggae, Drum & Bass and other forms of instrumental EDM to have an MC or hype man. It helps to keep the crowd focused if you spend a little time talking to them. All of the international touring Djs either have an MC or talk to the crowd themselves….
